Arguably the world's finest violinist, Milstein recorded these works in 1940s and we are privileged to be able to listen to them today.
I was driving when I first heard the Mendelssohn over the car radio. I was so blown away I had to stop the car and listen. I'm listening to it as I type this and the hairs are standing up on the back of my neck. It's exquisite. Buy it!

I'm blown away by this album. I've spent the day ringing people up and telling them to get it. It gives me something of the thrill one gets watching a brilliant gymnast, coupled with the almost unbearable joy listening to an artist of genius. And the whole production is so warm and vibrant. I just love it!

Such is Classic FM's marketing team's enthusiasm for releasing these 'Music For' compilation albums we should soon have a CD in our collection to cover every eventuality in our lives!

This one is for dinner parties - although being a single CD it may need to be played several times depending on how quickly your guests eat - and the intention is to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere with perhaps an air of sophistication to those social events.

There should be something on this album to please everyone round the dinner table. Satie's 'Trois Gymnopedies' is soothing and familiar, Haydn's 'Cello Concerto no. 2' is more lively and Handel's 'Water Music' adds a bit of ceremony to the event.

The recordings, as ever with ... Read More:

This is an absolutely superb version of the Bach Cello Suites. The intonation is flawless throughout, the tonal quality beautiful and the interpretation often gives a fresh insight into these familiar works. The recording quality is of an extremely high satandard.

Does the full complement of stars indicate a perfect recording ? No, of course not. Maxim Vengerov will no doubt go on to greater and better things.

What this recording does is capture a young maesto at the youthful peak of his powers. In an earlier age, like Paginini, he would no doubt have been accused of congress with the devil.

The energetic approach to both pieces undoubtedly has pitfalls, the second movement of Mendelsohn seems to find him all at sea and for this alone will exclude it from the pantheon of great recordings of this particular piece.

However he provides what is possibly the definitive recording of the Bruch, and finishes the album with an absolutely spectacular third movement of Mendelsohn.

In a word, this recording is breathtaking. Brahms' genius is superbly displayed in the long first movement, in which he gave himself all the space he needed to develop the theme of the piece to such an extent that the result is a completely fulfilling, emotional and evocative whole. The melody is simple and effective, the orchstration exquisite. The second and inevitably slow second movement, whilst undeniably graceful, fails to measure up to the splendour of the first. It is tranquil, but not especially moody. The final movement of the piece is a lively show-piece for the soloist, and perhaps the sense of festivity rather detracts from the dramatic feeling of the piece thus far. Overall the concerto lacks continuity; the second movement is quite disparate from ... Read More:

Music : Bach - Violin Concertos
Perlman is a violonist whose perormance is regarded as standard when it comes to Bach's works; in this album however, I was a bit disappointed of finding what I would expect in that the whole work sounds rather classic than baroque.
also, the orchestra seems to be a bit axcited of having Perlman as the violinist (!!?) as you simply can't hear the orchestra as it's always in the background. This gets quite annoying when it comes to question and answer parts between the violin and orchestra or when it's the violin who should be rather in background.. but that's a matter of recording I should think..

but in general, you still, no doubt, can enjoy the perfection of Perlman's performance, if you're not fussy about different interpretations of Bach's ... Read More:

Everything you need to know about the sounds a violin can make is contained in these 24 caprices.Paganini played the violin so well that people thought he was possessed by the Devil.
But in modern parlance I would say that these pieces are not so much evil as "wicked!" You even get to hear the theme tune to the tv arts programme "The South Bank Show."

Clear? Utmostly classical if not classic violin playing that is so beautiful that it sounds like a visit at the museum, or, and I am afraid it is how I feel about it, like some perfectly sampled, rendered and tempered violin playing produced by a synthesizer. It is difficult to feel any personality in that too "perfect" music, and Bruch is perfect in his own turn to amplify that feeling with his first concerto which was composed following the most surprising method. It was rewritten several times under the solicited and welcome influence of several other people, to make sure in a way it would correspond to the ambient taste more than to the composer's unique feelings. And he must have disliked this opportunistic work enough to have sold it, all rights attached, to the ... Read More:

This two CD set is worth buying for Rostropovich's interpretation of the Schumann cello concerto alone. The Schumann has been recorded by all the big names and as a result there are many fine versions available. However, none of them compare to this one... duPre has the strengh and power but lacks refinement... Isserlis sacrifices intensity for technical perfection... Yo Yo Ma's interpretation is engaging but hardly heart-rending. Only Rostropovich does the music justice. Here passion, sensitivity and longing are united in the most exquisite cello tone imaginable. More than any other this recording communicates the soul of the cello.
The recording of the Dvorak cello concerto included here is widely regarded as definitive and has yet to be surpassed. It makes ... Read More:
