Whoever is going to buy this cd will be certainly satisfied with it. It contains an excellent performance of Dvorak cello concerto. However its status as the "best", definitive performance (if ever these kind of statements can make any sense) of this work is certainly excessive. For instance, Rostropovich with Talich is not as sumptuously played but it is certainly more idiomatic. Personally I prefer it. The famous Casals recording is, as cello playing, unmatchable. The pulse and phrasing of Casals are a class apart even for Rostropovich. Du Pre with Celibidache provides such a moving performance which, for all its smoothnes, richness and fullness of sound, the Rostropovich-Karayan cannot match.

Although not having any classical music training, nor the ability to write a critical analysis, all I can say is that from the opening notes to the closing chord I was absolutely captivated. It's a hypnotic collection of pieces which simply draw you into following their every turn, step, phrase and passage. The melodies are haunting and indeed sinuous, sensual, emotive...you really can't avoid flowing with them. The technical aspects mean nothing to me other than I have a deep appreciation for the work and energy of Kennedy as well his phenomenal ability to make me want hear again and again whatever he does - be it jazz, Hendrix and now this. Immediately after the release of this Cd Gidon Kremer gave a concert in Royal festival hall & brought the audience to their feet on a number of occasions. he next time he gave a concert a few years later he brought the audience to their knees with despair. his Cd however has the most superb collection of Piazzollas music & a Russian or Polish piece which rarely appears on tango CDs, to my knowledge only 3 times, which is great music to dance to. I absolutely love this CD and highly recommend it.

Recently I gave a talk on Saint Saens at my local music society and played several extracts of his music all of which were taken from this CD. I have other recording of some of the tracks but those on this cd are better especially those that are conducted by Charles Dutoit. Kyung-Wha Chung the violin soloist in the violin concerto is also of a terrific standard and gives a performance saint saens would be proud of. I would highly recommend this CD to you.

It was a gift. When I fist listened to it, I could no beleave in what I was listening. Brazilian music played on a, or accompained by a cello. Yo-Yo MA achieves the hard task to put together the cello with one of the most rich music in the planet. I neve get tired to listen to it. You should try it to.
