This is a truly sumptuous collection of Mozart's Violin Sonatas. Izthak Perlman's control and style on the violin is wonderful with an assured accompaniment by pianist, Daniel Barenboim.

This kind of box set collection would appeal to anyone who is interested hearing Mozart's music beyond the ubiquituous Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and such like. It is indeed very typical of the period and for me was particularly of interest as I am a violinist and am currently playing the Allegro from the E Minor Sonata K304 (300cc). So, this recording helped me gain the finest insight into how to project a performance worthy of the piece which is both dark and moving but yet a joy to play.

However, the K304 is not the only fascinating sonata ... Read More:

Definitive performances of very famous guitar pieces, in the setting in which some of them were written and inspired.
A benchmark for students of the guitar and a recording that should be the cornerstone of any fans collection. Inspirational!

Don't let anyone put you off this exquisite recording. This is my favourite piece of music and I love this rendition. It is a powerful evocation of the spirit of Beethoven and I am cirtain he would appreciate the skill with which it is played. Why he might cry so emotionaly engaging is the performance. Filled with subtle feminine nuances of phrasing and expression in the solo part, none of which is unsupported by the conductor and orchestra, it is very well rehearsed. It is a uniquely personal reading yet quintessentialy Beethovian, in point of fact I would say she get's more Beethoven out of the piece than we have any right to expect! We should never fail to appreciate the feminine finesse and dexterity of Anne-Sophie Mutter's pacing and dynamic ... Read More:

I have been listening to Bach's violin concerti on and off for over 20 years. And, I simply never tire of them. There is something around technical brilliance, profusion of melodies and balance; a kind of perfection. This particular recording is top notch.

This series, produced by EMI in the days of LPs, is one of the great achievements of the gramophone - they rightfully belong up there with the Decca Ring, the EMI Callas series, and any other candidates you care to name. Together they provide a truly comprehensive survey of singing right through the age of recording up to the early days of the LP. Sadly, to the best of my knowledge, only Volumes 3 & 4 have appeared on CD - the very earliest era of recording and the period up to the introduction of electrical recording methods that were originally on Volumes 1 and 2 really deserve to be heard again.

Volume 3, the collection under discussion here, covers the period from 1926-1939. This was a veritable Golden Age of Singing - in Wagner ... Read More:

For a concerto already so beutifully recorded by many great violinists(Kennedy, Perlman, Chung) you would have thought it difficult to add anything new. Mutter's recent recording is, however, extremely refreshing. Instead of dwelling on the more romantic yearnings of the concerto her playing is raw and very sparing with the vibrato. Her engagement with the orchestra is amazing, especially in the final movement where the violin stumbles like a drunk through repeated rythms in the bass. With what is undoubtedly one of the greatest violin concertos ever written, Mutter seems to be in a class of her own.

I originally bought this fabulous CD to replace my vinyl version of the Ravel Introduction & Allegro (for harp, flute, clarinet, & string quartet). I was absolutely astonished at the phenomenal performance of the Franck and Debussy Sonatas by Kyung Wha Chung and Radu Lupu.

The Ravel is a seriously underrated miniature masterpiece. It is in fact a very sensual impressionist work, very cleverly written. The overwhelming impression is almost climactic in its passion and yet so perfectly beautiful... I don't understand why it isn't more widely known. This performance with Ossian Ellis and the Melos Ensemble is indeed exceptional, perhaps it doesn't sound so fair otherwise?

César Franck's sonata was dedicated to the Belgian vioinist ... Read More:

This is a splendid disc! The Serenade to Music is performed in its original version for soloists which is quite different (better?) than the subsequent choral version. The soloists present a marvellous account and the orchestral textures provide a ravishing counterpoint. Of particular note is the violin solo at the beginning which ably sets the scene for this account.
The Mystical Songs (text by George Herbert) are wonderfully sung by Thomas Allen and yet again are accompanied with great sensitivity and skill. The orchestral texture in Love bade me welcome is particularly fine as is Allen's performance which captures the tentative steps of the narrator into relationship with the Divine with an understated passion.
Nabuko Imai's Viola Solo at the beginning ... Read More:
