That genius of Brahms which was exemplified with the Second Piano Concerto is once again on display here: the Violin Sonatas are three of his best Chamber works, written with care, tenderness and a musical intuition unlike any other.

Schumann, Brahms' mentor, was often quoted as seeing an unfertilised genius within the young Romantic, and gave him many opportunities to compose, so allowing his genius to grow. Two products of this were the Piano Sonatas and the Intermezzos (superbly recorded by Radu Lupu on Decca), though the latter set was not 'through-composed'.

The Violin Sonatas are touching, Romantic and bold journeys through the mind of a tortured man at various peaks of his musical and pianistic career. Here and ... Read More:

This CD features three of the great twentieth century British works. It begins with Walton's Violin Concerto which, written in 1939 and revised in 1943, is serenely indifferent to its historical context. (In fact, much of it was written in the south of Italy and, certainly, its ethereal atmosphere is more suggestive of the Mediterranean than the blackout.)

As for the maverick soloist Nigel Kennedy, this piece is in many ways an ideal vehicle for him to display his talents. The second movement in particular, 'Presto capriccioso alla napolitana', makes huge demands on technical virtuosity. Kennedy is almost unfailingly accurate with intonation in the higher registers. His double-stopping is especially impressive. The Violin Concerto ... Read More:

Barber is a composer who unfortunately is seen by the majority of people to have one hit - Everybody has heard the "Adagio for strings" but little else, in my experience. Having heard a recording of one of the movements of the violin concerto - I hurried to by the CD - and this is the one I came across. Luckily for me - the CD not only contained the violin concerto - but also the piano and cello. Barber is a composer who has mystified many people - being a man who kept to no singular style and wrote as if composing in several different periods. The violin concerto is mesmerizing for the most part - with the first two movements contrasting cleverly with the third - and if you have enjoyed the violin concerto you'll be sure to enjoy the ... Webern's music is among the most interesting I've heard. It's right on the cusp between "classical" and "modern", avoiding the stochastic excesses of the latter and breaking free of the occasionally hackneyed mould of the former.

His works are completely incomprehensible but that's what makes them all the more interesting. And of course the fact that the package is the complete set of his works makes it a highly attractive proposition. We want more of these "complete works" boxes.

The book that accompanies the set is comprehensive and informative, and contains the full lyrics for all the songs, in three languages. Recommended.

It was the great showman-virtuoso Nicolo Paganini who commissioned Berlioz to write a viola concerto in order to show off the qualities of his latest acquisition - a Strad, of course. Paganini, so the story goes, had been so impressed by literature-loving Berlioz on hearing his Symphonie Fantastique that he approached him there and then and suggested the commission. But despite Harold in Italy being a viola concerto in all but name, Paganini expressed disappointment over the first movement. Doubtless, it was too subtle and idiosyncratic a work for his flamboyant, extrovert style. Like Hamlet, the viola is a protagonist, but not one that's constantly in the limelight.

At times, Tabea Zimmermann has elements of Paganini about her playing. ... Read More:

If you haven't heard these recordings, you have a nice surprise ahead of you. The Mendelssohn dates from 1981 and the Brahms from 1982. Because of the recording dates, you've got the young protege, Anne-Sophie Mutter, firmly under the leadership of the old master, Herbert von Karajan, with that marvelous orchestra to draw on for generous support.

Ms. Mutter has never been closer since then to the gentler ways of performing these pieces as she is here. The accompaniment is very well balanced and perfectly complements the solos.

Being used to a lot of fire from Ms. Mutter, some may complain that these performances aren't sizzling enough.

I found that her interpretation of Mendelssohn was delightfully restrained which ... Read More:
