While I do not think there is ever such a thing as a perfect recording (even if one is "definitive"), this is as close as you can get! Barenboim is a master in interpretting Beethoven, Berliner Philharmoniker are one of the best orchestras (and no strangers to beethoven), and Perlman is an amazing virtuoso violinist, possessing such beautiful sound.

The result: Beethoven's lyrical violin concerto sounding "as it should" - the tempi are perfect, and there is so much expression. The soloist is never drowned by the orchestra, which is a possible danger with concertos. The way Perlman plays the famous Kreisler cadenzas is unbelievable - fast, but not showy, with beautiful sound - really impressive.

What's more - the violin ... Read More:

73.Elgar - Violin Concerto by: London Philharmonic Orchestra

Music : Elgar - Violin Concerto
Elgar played the violin himself, and this concerto is his greatest gift to his fellow violinists. When he composed the work in 1909 and 1910, there were already many concertos that gave room for virtuosic playing. Elgar did something different: he created a score that does not so much show what the violin can do as reveal all that it can say.

Here the solo violin yearns, rejoices, pleads and consoles, and then, in one of the most original cadenzas ever written for any instrument, it takes up many of the previous themes and views each familiar melody in an utterly new way. Basil Maine, Elgar's first biographer, said it best when he remarked that most cadenzas call for the soloist to step into the limelight. Elgar instead asks the player ... Read More:

According to Vivaldi scholar Michael Talbot, Vivaldi's cello concertos 'tower above' those of his contemporaries. Some of his most inspired compositions feature this instrument - whether as concertos or sonatas. Vivaldi wrote 27 cello concertos in all, and this first Naxos CD of the complete set contains no less than seven of them.

While there are several versions of these concertos on offer, I doubt if there is a better recording than this one or a better soloist to play them than Raphael Wallfisch. (David Watkins is another cellist who can conjure up a captivating and authentically Baroque sound at will.)

Talbot has drawn attention to the fact that in Vivaldi's concertos for 'lower' register instruments - bassoon and cello ... Read More:

As its title states, this 1965 LSO/Barbirolli recording of du Pre's deeply emotional and passionate account of the Elgar cello concerto remains the definitive version, and has been continually available since its 1960's release, after more than four decades.

The recording is now found on many EMI collections and box sets, and for that reason I would recommend one of these alternative versions as they usually offer better value. For du Pre fans there is the `Jacqueline du Pre Complete EMI Recordings' 17 CD box set, and for the Elgar fan there is the 5CD set `Elgar Orchestral Works' (also including the Janet Baker Sea Pictures) on the EMI Classics label.

A truly historic performance, essential to everyone's collection.

Berlioz is a sadly neglected composer. However, he was a true revolutionary and an absolute genius who wrote a huge amount of totally original and imaginative compositions. In this bargain value set Sir Colin Davis does noble justice to this wonderful music.

The set includes the famous 1960s recording of the Symphonie Fantastique and listening to it now one is struck by the energy and passion which pervades the work, put in by both the composer (who wrote it under the influence of unrequited love for an English Shakespearean actress) and the conductor and orchestra (both on dazzling form).

The other major jewel in this set is the recording of Romeo et Juliette. This is perhaps my favourite of Berlioz's many pieces as it is simply overwhelmingly ... Read More:

I had high expectations of the Bruch on this recording and was not disappointed.

On some recordings of the Bruch you need to really listen quite hard to hear the soloist. There's a tendency to try and make the piece overly emotional and as a result it can lose its sparkle and the performance can appear to be lacking in confidence and almost timid in its delivery.

Not so here. Every note is hit perfectly and the sheer virtuosity of the performer shines through. Tone is great and there is plenty of drama. You can hear it all, and it sends a shiver down your spine. The recording quality is excellent - don't let the fact that it's a 1972 analogue remaster put you off. It sounds better than many 21st Century recordings that I have. The other tracks ... Read More:

This is a three disc set comprised of nine cello concertos performed by one of the most loved musicians of the last century. Included is her justly famous recording of the Elgar cello concerto, one of the most beautiful works for any instrument which in her hands sounds like a love song to a vanished world. Jackie's intense love for the cello can be heard in every note, as her soul sings through the music. No other cellist has communicated the joy in the Haydn C major so expertly. Her interpretation of the Saint-Saens concerto is also wonderful combining wildness with great delicacy. The Monn is seldom heard but has a gorgeous slow movement vividly performed here. Schumann's A minor concerto is perhaps the most beautiful, and features Jackie's best playing: stunningly beautiful ... Read More:

Music : Lloyd Webber plays Lloyd Webber
This updated version of Julian Lloyd Webber's CD is stunning. Beautiful songs, beautifully played. Julian interprets his brother's work better than anyone else! And he also shows his natural writing abilities in the liner notes.

Even if you aren't into classical and/or show music, this is a CD worth buying!

The title may be a little hyberbolic, but this recording is just fantastic, and is something that I listen to time and again. Du Pre is a genius and she shows her wonderful musicianship to great effect with both the Haydn and the Boccherini. I would rate this recording up there with her iconic rendition of the Elgar cello concerto. The three concertos never fail to please me and they always bring a smile to my face. I couldn't recommend this recording highly enough.
