Nice to see that Bela has expanded his classical repertoire from the single piece that he used to play on stage (and on his DVD).
Having been a fan of his for many years and having been fortunate enough to catch him "Live" at The Mean Fiddler" in Harlesden a few years ago, I am delighted to see him go from strength to strength.
He has also moved The Banjo from what was perceived by many to be an instrument of derision to a thing of considerable beauty!

Let's face it, Bela could play anything, if he set his mind to it.His ability and talent seem boundless.

I look forward with anticipation to see where he decides to go from here.

From the first notes of the first concerto, it is easy to tell that the playing is going to sparkle. Manze and the Academy of Ancient music are on top form, enthusing the music with warm and virtuosity. The result is immensely satisfying to listen to.

There are so many good bits... but the Concerto for oboe in D minor, Op.9/2: Adagio (Track 5) is sublime. I've heard lots of recordings of this on the radio, but this is the one that stands out and makes the CD worth buying for just this 5min 30 sec! It's the smoothest, least affected version. The oboist, Frank de Bruine, manages to make the notes soar effortlessly without faltering - the result is pure relaxation to listen to.

The rest of the concertos are a delight ... Read More:

85.Orchestral Music for Christmas from: EMI
October 07, 1991
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Orchestral Music for Christmas
Imagine snow on the ground, logs on the fire burning, christmas trees lit up and the cold breath of carol singers singing in the night. The CD is very evokative of Christmas past. Made me reminisant of my childhood (not that long ago). Best ever CD available for Christmas. The Choir (Guildford Cathedral) is amazing. Brings a tear every time i listen. The music from the BBC programme Box of Delights used track 3 for its theme tune. This CD is hard to get hold of. HIGHLY recomended.

The cello is the voice of mystery, of depth, of secret and dark caves in the mind of the living, in the memory of the dead. The cello opens the door to the other side of today, here, now, me, to the other side, virtual or real, virtual and real, of what our five senses can capture and even what our mind, the sixth dimension of our sixth sense, can perceive and conceive. When Tan Dun adds to this voice from beyond the grave and the fire of some terrific dragon his own sense of being within and without, inside and outside Chinese music or western harmony, he can reach the power of thunder and the speed of lightning as well as the delicate falling and landing or morning dew on the light leaves of grass that pierce the dawn with their green blades. ...
