The murky world of folk purists is a place I would never dare to venture but as a fan of folk music, this is a perfect mix of a rockier roots-sound and folky laments and shanties.

In fact....that intro sounds a little too folky already,Lakeman has carved a career out of sterling tunes, traditional instruments and clever lyrics, with "Poor Mans Heaven" he has bettered his 2006 classic "Freedoms Fields".

The feel to this LP is heavier, more robust but the mandolins, violins and acoustic guitars still dominate, the upright bass and acoustic drums form a bedrock of cornish granite.

2008 has seen some great folk records and Lakeman has added an other to that list...!

Finally. After all these years of mild disappointments we have a new Metallica album worthy of the name.

First impressions track by track (because I'm that sad)...

"That was just your life" starts with a slow heartbeat then builds until by about 1 min 30 we're on our way. This could easily be off "Justice" its that good. 4m 52s and Kirks been thawed out of his deep freeze and ta da! we have serious solo action on a Metallica album again [large smile spreads across face]

"The End of The Line" keeps it going. Could it be off "Puppets"? It even sounds a bit like "Puppets". Did he just sing "taste me you will see..." ok maybe not but he could have. Always knew these guys still had it in them.

Well, well, well, where have MGMT come from? They seem to have just popped up out of no man's land!

I have to say, when I first heard them on Radio 1 I was a little unsue. But after seeing them live and listening to their album I just can't stop listening to it.

The whole album is filled with hits, Time To Pretend, Weekend Wars, Electric Feel and Kids to name a few but to be honest I should really list them all!

They kind of remind me of The Who!

Amazing band, amazing album - a must buy

This is certainly an interesting album but it will not be to everyone's taste. I recommend that you forget the hype and just listen to it - this is one of those albums that you will either love immediately, or not. I would say that it takes a few listens and is well worth the effort. The vocals (and harmonies) are really lovely and the music is fresh and adventurous. The opening track does the rest of the album no favours; I found it more rewarding to start with track 2 and then listen on, returning to track 1 at the end (I hope that makes sense!). Well worth taking a chance on - each track is a surprise and there are not many albums around these days that deliver that.

'The graveyard shift' in radio are those late late hours when all good folk are tucked up in bed and Alan Partridge-esque DJ-s are playing undemanding soulful muzak to factory shift workers and long distance lorry drivers.
Now Radio Norwich listeners whiling away the wee small hours can find a new selection of Eva Cassidy songs bulking out the tired and unimaginative playlists of their tired and unimaginative Djs.
Without wishing to be too unkind to the late Eva Cassidy who certainly had a fine voice and who recorded some half decent songs in her time. I will be unkind to her record company who appear to have a limitless supply of unreleased EC songs at their disposal. How many more sub local radio friendly songs are locked away in the archives I wonder ?

On first listen this reminded me of very early 80's Culture Club beats with early Kim Wilde vocals mixed with loads of funk!! Then it hit me, that The Ting Tings are a reincarnated Transvision Vamp, with the punky / rocky edge!! It's gonna take a few listens to get me hooked but the tracks Great DJ, the huge No.1 single That's Not My Name and Shut Up And Let Me Go are so full of attitude and funk they over-power everything else what's on the cd - worth a listen definately - not a bad cd, and they sound like nothing else around at this moment in time.

This is a great chill out album, a slight taste of Texas but in general this is Sharleen's baby. Great vocals that gently hook you in and relax you. She tries a number of styles and influences so this is, at times, hard to define as an album, so the best thing to do is just sit back and enjoy!
Recommended.

is this any good, yes. would it be any good without damon albarns name on it? yes but surely wouldn't make the light of day on western charts. its a great opeara score and the good thing is even without having seen the show, its easy to imagine how track names complement the music.. worth buying, still undecided.

Like one of the previous viewers I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the album yesterday. Their first two singles released on the Columbia label (Geraldine and Daddy's Gone) are just a taste of what this excellent band has to offer.

Whilst everyone out there may not be able to relate personally to each of the tracks, they will know someone that can and will appreciete the emotionally charged lyrics. The songs on this album aren't just about festival sing-a-longs, although it's clear that from the bands performances at the UK's main festivals they will be remembered as the main highlight of 2008. Each of the songs are cleverly written and are perfect in the backdrop of our society today.

Will they look out place in 20 years? Maybe, but for this moment the music which ... Read More:
