Music : The Lord of the Rings [1978 Version]
Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated movie was quite justifiably a box office flop...and for many reasons. However, Leonard Rosenman's magnificent score is definately NOT one of them!!

Rosenman has written many film scores, notably including 'Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home', but this is his best work by far and a truly exceptional soundtrack album that compliments Tolkien's world perfectly.....it's original, complex, subtle, moving, dark in places...and unlike many film scores this one does not just continually vary the main theme!! In Fact, each of Middle Earth's races has it's own distinct 'feel', something Howard Shore also focused on for his celebrated score for Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings movies some 20 odd years later!

The pieces selected in the CD are highly evoking, being soundracks from very popular films. As the music of the first theme invaded the room, we all shared identical expressions of uneasiness and nervous smiles. If that is the atmosphere you are trying to create, this is your music.

Music : Themes of Horror II
Apalling. Abysmal. Fraudulent. Three words to sum up this astonishingly poor compilation of themes to some of the greatest horror films ever made.

The songs are apparently performed by 'The London Theatre Orchestra'. What a joke. The LTO clearly comprises one very bored geek who purchased a Korg OEW sequencer back in 1998 and has spent too much time trying to replicate horror movie themes when he should have been out meeting people.

Avoid this at all costs. Please. You have been warned.

Music : Samurai Banners [1969] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Samurai Banners by Hiroshi Inagaki is rather unique among 'Jidai-geki'(period drama)films in Japan. It's one of those rare big budget historical epics in the same vein as Kurosawa's 'Kagemusha' and 'Ran', and as such it makes a nice change from your typical Samurai movie.
The story is about Yamamoto Kansuke, an ambitious warrior who dreams of uniting the war-torn Japan of the sixteenth century by joining the fearless Takeda clan. He proves his valour to Shingen, the clan leader, and becomes his right-hand man, helping the Takeda defeat their various foes. Unfortunately both Shingen and Kansuke fall in love with the same woman - Princess Yufu - and their constant fighting over her might lead them and the Takeda clan to disaster.
