I got this CD for my boyfriend for Christmas last year, and he absolutely loves it!
Both of us are Tim Burton and "Nightmare Before Christmas" fans, so of course it wasn't long before I borrowed it for myself.

The first disc is basically the original soundtrack, so if you already have the standard version then you'll already know what tracks are there and how great it is to listen to. A wonderful addition is that the soundtrack has actually been re-mastered, so the music is clearer, and still a delight to hear.

The second disc is where it gets interesting. The first four tracks are songs from the delightful movie performed by well known artists. Here's the basic rundown.
"This is Halloween", performed by ... Read More:

While the philosopher's stone score is amazingly original and frankly a work of pure musical genius, the score to the prisoner of azkaban lacks any real direction and serves as a pure bare bones narrative to the visuals and additional audio. The minimum any score should provide is a narration of the emotions of the characters, and generally reveal the structure of the film in order to pace the audience, and that's all you get here.
The best scores ever written, which includes several by the genius mr williams, have to have a strong direction, unifying universal themes, and powerful rhythm forcing the audience to cry, laugh and jump at all the right moments, unfortunately the score neither achieves or approaches any of these.

I originally bought the album for just the 'Where Eagles Dare' piece but after listening to the rest, I went out and bought all the films for the rest of the tunes. :)

It looks as though most of the reviewers who really like this album a lot, have had it or been familiar with it for a long time. Me too. Had it on eight-track about 1973 or 1974 as far as I remember. I love it. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is the best story ever written and that's not open to debate as far as I'm concerned - and this music has the magical quality of being able to transport me to Middle Earth. But then I was a kid in the late hippy era and minds were often modified to accommodate and appreciate this sort of music back in the good ol' days - much as minds have been modified to appreciate that tuneless din they call 'acid house' in more recent years. So it's not as straight forward as just saying: "This album is amazing! Your life won't be ... Read More:

As other reviewers have noted, Howard Shore shows once again with this CD his great talent for film soundtrack-writing. Each theme is tailored superbly to the character or place it represents, and the orchestration is superb, allowing a great spectrum of emotional colour to shine through.

If I have a criticism it probably concerns what another reviewer referred to with his comparison of the music on one hand alongside the film, and on the other as music in its own right. The editing of the CD is such that you get a lot of themes, or passing references to them, constantly bobbing up in the mix like ingredients in a casserole. So the music, whilst undeniably beautifully written and expertly orchestrated, sometimes feels as though it is never allowed ... Read More:

Now I'll admit that I miss John Williams doing the soundtracks... I found his music a lot more playful and somehow just more fitting... having said that I do really like this CD!
The stuff by the Wyrd Sisters (Jarvis Cocker et al) is just silly, it seemed slightly out of place in the film, but sits well as a few stand alone tracks on the CD... and Hippogriff is exceptionally catchy!
I like the music introducing the quidditch teams as well, and Rita Skeeter is an interesting track!
If you've seen the film then the music is very evocative, reminding you of what you've seen... if you haven't seen the film I wouldn't recommend the CD!

The story of the American Civil War had never been so well covered until Ken Burns undertook his monumental undertaking a few years ago. The music CD covers all the main musical themes which accompanied the series and make no mistake, its wonderful! What I like about it is the simple melodies taken from the well know folk songs which existed at the time. The highlight is of course is Ashoken Farewell. Its haunting. If you saw the series and enjoyed it like I did, then this CD is a great buy.
