This two CD set is a superb introduction to Merle Haggard and represents an absolute bargain. If you are a fan of the Bakersfield sound then look no further. I was astonished at the consistency and brilliance of the material included here. With excellent backing from his band the Strangers; sometimes including the great James Burton on guitar - Merle keeps it simple and the results include some of country music's greatest moments. There can be few better songwriters in any genre. Haggard delivers an abundance of great records here; with customary sadness, beauty and melancholy. Each track sung as brilliantly as ever. You can almost taste the whiskey and smell the smoke from the crowded bar-room. Five stars out of five.

I am a longstanding fan of Irish Traditional Music and so, when I was standing in a Birmingham record store quite a few years back and my ear caught the sound of "Happiness", I immediately asked the assistant the name of the band. I couldn't believe my ears at the clear and clean perfection of the sound. I've known this CD for a number of years and yet it always sounds virtually as fresh as the first time I heard it, very unusual for music which can be easily remembered - at least for me! One of the clever things about this CD is the way the softer songs are interspersed with the more boisterous numbers. Together with the complete sun recordings (and "Heartbreak Hotel"), this anthology is the ultimate statement of the recording powers of Elvis Presley. Only the Elvis tv-special recording of "If I Can Dream" and some of the recordings from the Nashville 1970 sessions and the 1969-1970 live recordings can even come close to the majesty of these great recordings. The 1st cd of the anthology pretty much sums up, why Elvis is the king. "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto" are just the tip of the iceberg. I can't tell you how many copies of this album (what's that?? some may ask) when it was first released, so great was my love for it. I gifted friends and family because of how it moved me, a southerner with no axe to grind. The music, the lyrics, the narratives, and the songsters remain some of my favorites. For the country and rock and historically-inclined, this is a must-buy. The only problem with having this as a CD is that the entire album booklet is not avilable, as it was with the original lp.
