As if contemporary country music needed any reminding of Alan Jackson's place in the highest echelon of the art, 'Drive' serves that purpose masterfully. A mix of original and cover songs, Jackson is on top form in this album. The success of the title track was deserved and it leads the way into a very neatly connected series of classic Jackson material. Songs about love, songs about cars, (songs about the love of cars!). His live CMA version of 'Where were you when the world stopped turning', is a poigniant reminder of the need to look at what is important in our lives in the post 9/11 era. Perhaps including the studio version of the same song allows it to dominate the album a little too much, but it is a small price to pay when listening to ... Read More:

Elvis' best album and my own personal favourite. After wasting the best part of the 1960's on drivel, the King came back strong with a set of songs that paid tribute to the wide range of musical styles that influenced him: Gospel, Country, Blues, Soul and everything else in between. Why this album doesn't have the same prestige of a Sgt. Pepper's or a Pet Sounds I'll never know. Any greatest hits compilation might give you more famous Elvis songs, but 'From Elvis in Memphis' gives you a rarity: a coherent, thought-out album performed with enormous power and passion. The producer, Chips Moman, the musicians and accompanying vocalists also deserve their due in making this album a classic. This album came at a time when the King was back, and although ... This album (I purchased the LP when it first came out & then purchased the CD when it came out) is a "must have" to any bluegrass or country music lover. This album brings together the legends of bluegrass with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB). Buy volume II too. Now, if only NGDB will issue "Dirt, Silver & Gold" on CD.

This album, in its original vinyl form, was my first full bluegrass album. It starts impressively with the up-tempo title track and maintains a high standard throughout the original album. I replaced my vinyl with CD, since when Rhino have re-mastered it and added two bonus tracks (You're gonna change, Root like a rose) that I'm told are good but not bluegrass. In any case, this album is well worth it for the original ten tracks.

Wayfaring stranger, a traditional song, became a top ten country hit and ensured the success of the album against record company expectations. This was 1980, remember, when Kenny Rogers was the biggest name in country music and the Urban Cowboy craze was at its height. I love Kenny's music and the Urban Cowboy soundtrack, but there ... There can be no doubt that the original coming-together of 'The Highwaymen' was an event that everyone should applaud and enjoy. Their first album was, I feel, their best, with its drama and darkness, but this album does try to run it a close second. If anything, it is rather more upbeat than their first, and there is still the same emphasis upon them sharing lead vocals or switching vocals between verses.

Track 1, 'The devil's right hand' is a rousing opener whereas the gentler, acoustic (almost 'folky') feel of the next track, 'Live forever', is an enjoyable contrast. Definitely more mellow than anything on their first album. The mandolin in that track and the piano and steel guitar in track 3 ('Everyone gets ... Read More:

This is that jackpot album the Mavericks were waiting for. You'd be forgiven for not having heard of them, as until Trampoline, they used to be filed under Country & Western. Actually the band is from Miami, they just do their thing in Nashville!
With each successive album (and since I discovered Trampoline, I've bought the rest!) they've gone less C&W, and more mainstream. On this one they've added a great horn section to give a latin flavour, and boy do they have fun!
Raul Malo, their lead singer has one of those voices that's clear as a bell, and soars effortlessly into falsetto as Roy Orbison's did, and Chris Isaak's does now. The musicianship from all is absolutely top class on ballads, and the foot tappers.
You must have heard the hit `Dance ... Read More:

George has had a long career spanning half a century and recorded for several labels. Sometime he re-recorded hits he'd had with previous labels, but what makes this compilation unique is that it includes original recordings from four different labels, covering the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties. Sony (who own the Epic recordings) licensed tracks from the other three labels represented here.

The first seven tracks were recorded for Mercury and cover the period 1955 to 1961, beginning with Why baby why and ending with Tender years. The standout from this period is Window up above, a very sad song about lost love. George's Mercury years are covered in greater depth in the 48-track double CD Cup of loneliness.

The next three tracks - She thinks I still ... Read More:

After making a classic album "Pieces of the Sky"...in the same year is released "Elite Hotel" which contains many classic songs, such as "Together Again", and "One of These Days". This is great country music but "Sin City" is a boring song, other songs are great!
