So many compilations are called ultimate collections but this is one of the few that justifies it, at least as far as the music is concerned. The liner notes are informative regarding her formative years (before she signed for Capitol) but don't say much about the actual music. Fortunately, there are plenty of other places from which this information is obtainable including Wikipedia.

Wanda Jackson started as a country singer but quickly switched to rock'n'roll. Later, she returned to country music although this phase of her career generally yielded mellower music than her brief early period as a country singer. On this compilation, the first CD is devoted to country music and the second to rock'n'roll. Of course, if you are only ... Read More:

...and only the true Elvis-ologist will be able to endure every minute of it. (Note: I'm writing this at the end of a working week in which I committed myself to playing a disc per day).

At first it was only his interpretation that had obviously declined since the early '60s - as a fellow musician once remarked, it was now "all power, not enough sensitivity". But by 1975 he sounded ready for retirement - over-dramatised versions of "Hurt" and "Unchained Melody" can't conceal the loss of pitch-accuracy.

Another problem is his choice of material - it may have been more "personal" to him than before, but does that make it any more attractive to the rest of us? Each disc is overburdened with self-pitying country ballads - and ... Read More:

Shania will coax you out of your shell and make your world come alive. Her soaring vocals rise above the arresting instrumentation and bring to life perhaps her most potent lyrical offerings ever. There is something profoundly captivating in her smokey voice. The cigarettes-and-coffee rasp puts one in mind of a late-career Sarah Vaughan. The album explores themes of love, despair, doubt, redemption, salvation and the consoling powers of intimate companionship. Woman In Me is an intriguing title but also, through the casual suggestiveness of the lyrical nuances, it invites suggestions that the listener can be themselves invited into that woman, so to speak, both in a figurative sense and also in an incarnate sense. Rarely has a singer managed to combine ... Read More:

Frank was born in England but raised in Australia, later to return to the UK to establish his singing career - a pattern repeated by Olivia Newton John. Whereas Olivia eventually based herself in America, Frank remained in the UK, playing the small country music circuit long after his pop successes were a distant memory. Country music has never been huge in Britain but it has enjoyed a reasonable level of support especially since the seventies. In the sixties, Frank Ifield discovered - as did the husband and wife team of Miki and Griff - that there was no significant following for the music. Frank, together with Miki and Griff, George Hamilton IV and a few others, helped to change that.

Like Miki and Griff, Frank had to compromise his music to get it heard ... Read More:

This twin CD album, which tells the stories of the American Civil War and Jesse James, is an absolute gem. If you like country music sung by the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris and Eric Clapton, you will love it. The lyrics are intelligent and thought provoking. The accompanying booklet is well worth a read. Together the two CDs give "the common man's" experience of the American Civil War and its aftermath. In some ways, it's an opera about heroism, injustice and ultimately, tragedy. I bought the vinyl version of the Legend of Jesse James back in 1980 and the music remains as fresh and moving as ever. I cannot recommend this double album highly enough.

Willie review #1:

I,ve never written a Willie review before and am not sure whether I should apply different criteria to septegenrians. Whatever I'll have whatever Willie's smokin these days because it obviously works. Another year - in this case 2004- another blinder of an album. The issue of duets always seems to bring me out in hives but Willie can generally pick em. I take it that he makes everyone fill out a questionnaire, the first question being "can you keep up with me". On this CD Norah Jones again shows (surprisingly) just what a good singer she is. Similar in tone to her duet with Ray Charles she pulls it off with grace (ooerr missus). Willie inhabits songs like warm jumpers although I doubt if Willie has ever had to wear one in Texas. The title track ... Read More:

Most people know about this album and rightly so, as Cash really delivers somthing special here. Throughout the recording not only does Cash perform his songs exactly as you would expect but his personality really shines as he banters with the prison inmates. It is clear from this album alone why Johnny Cash was so popular with all sorts of people. In between songs he jokes around, tells brief stories and, most importantly, connects with his audience. You can tell he has their full support all the way as they cheer and clap during just about every song.

Standout songs are Boy Named Sue, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, the Closing Medley and of course San Quentin. The latter song being performed twice in a row to the request of the inmates who immediately love the song. ... Read More:
