Most people know about this album and rightly so, as Cash really delivers somthing special here. Throughout the recording not only does Cash perform his songs exactly as you would expect but his personality really shines as he banters with the prison inmates. It is clear from this album alone why Johnny Cash was so popular with all sorts of people. In between songs he jokes around, tells brief stories and, most importantly, connects with his audience. You can tell he has their full support all the way as they cheer and clap during just about every song. Not really too much to say here. All of Tammy's greatest hits are here in their rightful place. The songs themselves are wearing well, and the timeless classics sound as good today as when her hair was so big God himself used to reach down and backcomb it for her. My favourite song of Wynette's is Til I Can Make It On My Own, a plaintive ballad about a woman who is telling her ex that she may be leaning on him from time to time. It's one of her finest songs, and definitely one of her finest vocal performances. She had a hard life, and was on top of her game musically when she died so tragically. An excellent introduction to Wynette and a great country album in itself.

When reading the sleeve notes and it claims that 'this album will change your life' or the like, you'd expect to raise an eyebrow! But, it truly is superb; touching on subject matters way ahead of it's time, hard hitting lyrics and a real individualism you'd wouldn't expect from mainstream Nashville. Essentially, this CD is filled with the "darker" material of this '70s output - an idea that should be applied to a lot of aritists - and the result is riveting. A must for those interested in "true" country music.

True I have been a Willie Nelson fan for many years. Just at a time when you perhaps expect a drop in his vocal ability after all Willie is well past 70, the man comes up with one of the best recordings of his long career. A rich and strong voice,and a fantastic recording engineerhas produced an album to savor. The man even rocks it on some tracks. Wonderful must buy stuff.

I had these ballads when they were originally released on vinyl LP's and it's good to have them on CD. Wheras JC explored a different storytelling landscape to that, say, of Marty Robbins (I wish JC had covered a few MR songs), this is still a good collection of both traditional and modern songs about life in the early days of America. JC's voice is strong and fits well with the darkness of many of the songs. Despite his undoubted abilities as a writer of both good tunes and lyrics, it's very good to hear him sing so many songs from other sources and to fit them into the context of what was to later become known as a 'concept' album. Mary Chapin Carpenter asks on the first track of Stones in the Road.I often can't walk after tapping my toes to country music but I had no problem walking after listening to this cd because the songs here aren't so much toe-tappers as ballads that soothe even when the lyrics speak of heartache and pain.Mary has a great voice - it's soft and clear and tells a lively story.The music on these tracks isn't showy and is just there to accompany her voice.This is the best country cd I have heard in my life - I liked every single song on it and would recommend it to people who don't usually listen to country.
