I am a huge Mindy Smith fan and her cover of "Jolene" is the best I've ever heard (according to the liner notes from Mindy's album "One Moment More," Dolly feels the same way), but I have to say that my favorite cut on this c.d. is "Dagger Through the Heart" sung by Sinead O'Connor. I agree with the reviewer who wrote that this song alone justifies the cost of the c.d. After hearing this album, it's hard not to come to the conclusion that Dolly Parton is one of the greatest songwriters still working today. In the way she tells a compelling story in a song, and very much in her own way, she can hold her own with such songwriting genuises as Leonard Cohen, John Prine, Tom Waits, and Joni Mitchell.

In 1952 Harry Smith released the hugely influential "Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music Volumes 1-3". This album catalogued a huge variety of folk music from the 1920s and 30s, some from well known artists like Blind Lemon Jefferson and The Carter Family and others from ultra-obscure artists, such as Hoyt Ming & His Pep-Steppers. This is currently available as a 6-CD box set. In 2000, the Revenant label released for the first time the fourth volume of this epic set as a double CD. The formula is still the same, a mix of the well known (eg The Carter Family who appear three times on this setlist) to more esoteric artists like Al Hopkins and his Buckle Busters. This is the one Willie Nelson album to have, even if you don't normally like his music. I lent my copy to a friend who really doesn't like the red-headed stranger. I had trouble getting it back! 'Stardust' is never far from the hi-fi in my home. When the sun is beating down and you just feel happily lazy, make yourself a tall cool drink, put this album on, slouch on the couch and remind yourself how privilieged you are compared to those who do not own a record of such richness and soul.

One of Barbra's very best albums. Full of classic recordings. Her voice sounds beautiful.

Renowned for her Bluegrass music and the support of her band Union Station Alison Krauss followed up her amazing album So Long So Wrong with something a little different. This album contains a collection of mostly Pop standards a good number of which have been done before, but none so beautifully. Most members of Union Station are present on this album but merely as musicians and they show of their full musical diverstiy with the use of more modern instruments and a drum kit. Alison's voice is as amazing as ever and she makes each and every track her own. For me the stand out track is the Todd Rundgren Classic, "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference," a song also covered by Manhatten Transfer, but the version here just blows ... Read More:

On this album, the follow-up to The grass is blue, Dolly explores her musical roots further. While still essentially a bluegrass album, there are other influences here. Mountain music with a modern edge would be a more accurate description. Dolly wrote some new songs for the album - Little sparrow, Bluer pastures, Mountain Angel and Marry me - and recorded covers of Seven Bridges Road (Eagles), Shine (Collective soul), I get a kick out of you (the often-covered Cole Porter classic), I don't believe you've met my baby (a Louvin Brothers song that Dolly previously recorded as a duet with Porter Wagoner, and which has been covered by many country singers, including Alison Krauss), A tender lie (Restless heart), In the sweet by and by and two songs she wrote and ...
