The first thing to say about this collection is that although some of Dolly's hits are here, a lot of them are missing including Jolene, 9 to 5, Here you come again, Coat of many colors, Two doors down, Joshua, Bargain store, The seeker, Old flames and You're the only one (to name a few). This is not, and was never meant to be, a hits collection. Plenty of those are already available. I'm sure that a lot of fans would have been happy for this collection to completely avoid the obvious classics (I know that I would) but I guess that commercial reality necessitated the inclusion of some of them.

At the other end of the spectrum, nine tracks (Bubbling over, Love with me, Because I love you, Most of all why, Robert, Chas, I'm doing ... Read More:

Johnny Cash himself said that this was his favourite album he ever made, so who are we to argue. This is a gospel album with out a doubt but do not let put you off. Every song on the album is personnal to Cash and picked for a real reason, the liner notes are worth the money alone. Just Cash and his guitar singing his favourites. Brilliant!!! a must for all Johnny Cash fans and all fans of gospel music.

This excellent compilation, with all of its tracks recorded in a brief, artistically fruitful six-year span, is lavished with sad but beautiful music. Loneliness is a key theme running through Williams work. Merely reciting some of the song titles demonstrates that: `'Nobody's Lonesome For Me', `Long Gone Lonesome Blues' and `(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle'. The music and words also speaks of an inner sense of despondency; you can see that in the confessional lyrics of `I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive', which read like a suicide note, and you can hear and feel it in heartfelt vocal performances that express failure (`I Just Don't Like This Kind Of Living') and futility (`My Son Calls Another Man Daddy').

Some of the songs in this massive collection make you shake your head with wonder - surely this one can't have been released as a record for people to buy in a record shop? Imagine the conversation from 1929 - "Excuse me, have you got I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground, by Bascom Lamar Lunsford?" "Why certainly young sir, it's right here, that'll be 30 cents!" But apparently ALL of these songs, ballads, fiddle tunes, gospel shouts, shape-note choirs, blues, string bands, cajuns and hot sermonising were indeed issued on 78s, and the public did buy them. Well - the rural folk in the Southern states, not those sophisticates in New York.
A guy called Ralph Peer found out by accident that white people down in the South would buy records by Uncle Bunt Stephens ... Read More:

In 1979 Dolly Parton released Great Balls Of Fire which completed her amazing transformation from country girl to disco diva! From the first track Star Of The Show it was a clear indication that Dolly was ready to party with the best of them. Although being a departure from her classic country albums Dolly was one of the very few performers who was able to crossover to mainstream pop without losing any of her traditional charms that had made her a star to begin with. The album, released here on cd for the very first time, contains some hidden gems such as Dolly's own country version of Help written by the legendary Beatles and the rousing title track first made famous by Jerry Lee Lewis. Also included are some beautiful self penned love songs such as Do You Think ... Read More:

This is a must-have CD for fans of good honest music. A classic.
