George Melly has been a living legend in the world of jazz for a long time now. Like any jazz singer (and indeed like most singers of any genre), his music is best heard live! This album has over an hour of superb live jazz, coupled with excellent back up and support from John Chiltens' Feetwarmers. Every song is sung in his usual deep but yet droll voice and mannerisms. If you are already a fan of George Melly, you will not come even close to being disappointed with this live album, and if you are just beginning to enjoy listening jazz, then you will love it!!!

94.Chris Barber at the BBC: Wireless Days 1961-1962 by: Chris Barber

Music : Chris Barber at the BBC: Wireless Days 1961-1962
When the recordings on this CD were made in 1961-1962 the BBC Jazz Club was a weekly radio programme, and Chris Barber's Jazz Band was riding the "trad jazz" boom. The musicians were all inspired by early jazz of New Orleans and Chicago and the line-up of the band was quite traditional. As well as Chris Barber on trombone, the band included long serving members Pat Halcox on trumpet, Dick Smith on bass, and Graham Burbidge on drums. I was initially disappointed when Monty Sunshine and Lonnie Donegan left the earlier band, but replacements were inspirational. Ian Wheeler plays alto-sax as well as a clear and compelling clarinet, and Eddie Smith's rythmic banjo patterns provide superb suuport to the whole band.
