Music : Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen: the Pye Jazz Anthology
In the twenties, thirties and early forties, a lot of pop music was jazz-based. The jazz influence in pop music faded rapidly during the 1940's, but jazz musicians staged a mini-comeback in the late fifties and early sixties in Britain. Chris Barber, Dave Brubeck and Acker Bilk all had one or two hits, but Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen had a whole string of hits. Kenny was a trumpeter. Other musicians played the trombone, drums, clarinet, banjo and bass. Most of their music was instrumental, but they did record some vocal tracks.

Their first hit was Samantha, a cover of a song from the movie High Society. That was followed by their biggest and most famous hit, Midnight in Moscow. Other hits included March of the Siamese children, Green ... Read More:

I bought this CD after being impressed by the Naxos disc of `John Rutter's Requiem. That was something of a revelation, and probably the strongest recording of that work available. This disc is far less impressive.

The Mass of the Children is a fine work. As when recording the Requiem, this Naxos version uses the chamber ensemble version of the work rather than the full orchestral version. As with the Requiem the performance is top notch, both musicians and voices. No one should expect a piece called `Mass of the Children' to be as deep or searching as a Requiem and this is indeed a lighter work. John Rutter was inspired by his experience of singing in Benjamin Britten's War requiem in 1963, but it is a lighter side of Britten's choral ... Read More:

I heartily agree this CD would be best enjoyed if the show had been seen in person. This review, though, is based off the CD alone.

Pro: Following the life of Peter Allan, the Boy From Oz is an undeniably enthusiastic rendering of his life, using songs Allan wrote.
Con: This enthusiasm, however, does sometimes bleed over into happy "cheese." Many people have never heard of Peter Allan until now, and his music does have a somewhat dated sound (70s).

Note: If you don't like Liza Minnelli's voice in real life, you won't like how she's rendered here - it's pretty good! The same goes for the style. The Boy from Oz might be a bit like "Hair" - you either love it or hate it.

Pro: His music was meant to be performed from the ... Read More:

This 3cd pack is an excellent buy for those fans of Chris wishing to hear how the band sounded in the late 60's and early 70's. It was, I feel a sort of "experimental" period for the Barber band, when it had shaken off the "trad" image, with the addition of electric guitars (although the banjo was still retained!)
The tracks are from two albums, "Drat That Frattle Rat" and "Get Rolling" - not generally well-known Barber recordings but well worth hearing if you have an open mind. Most of the tunes are pretty "obscure" although there are a few of the old Trad warhorses as well.Naturally the musicianship is up to the usual superb standard, with the addition on most of the tracks, of some younger progressive guest musicians (Rory Gallagher among them).

I came to this disk with no prior knowledge of the Temperance Seven or their exploits in the world of jazz. Therefore the contents of the disk came as a very pleasant surprise. What I found was a series of twenty-eight lively and well played jazz numbers, some well known and others less so. For those who appreciate a tight jazz ensemble playing the old style jazz, and doing it well, this series of recordings will be most welcome, as it was for me. The sleeve notes are neatly presented, and although fairly brief, they do give a list of the players and a brief background about the recordings together with a photograph of the group in a session.
