I've been to a number of Chris Barber concerts and I own many of his live recordings, of which this CD embraces the earliest made in Denmark in 1954 with (for me) the best of the Chris Barber jazz bands : incorporating Monty Sunshine on clarinet and Lonnie Donegan on banjo. Chris Barber himself is as good as for ever on trombone as well as occasionally taking over from Jim Bray on bass, and the drummer is the original Ron Bowden. Pat Halcox on cornet receives special praise on the CD insert notes, but for me he is somewhat disappointing as the trumpet lead is frequently subjugated, and his main slot "MakingWhoopee" is weak. I believe it is Monty Sunshine who steals the show : contributing superbly throughout and even turning the main lead ... Read More:

This 1998 CD features cornetist Ken Colyer on three separate occasions broadcasting for the BBC with his part-time bands of the '70s. Two of the groups (from 1972 or 1977) also have trombonist Len Baldwin, either John Warr or Gerry Turnham on clarinet and a three- or four-piece rhythm section with pianist Ray Smith on the later date. The other session (from 1975) features Colyer with a reunited Crane River Jazzband, an expanded group with a second trumpeter and such notables as clarinetist Monty Sunshine and John R. T. Davies tripling on alto, baritone and trombone. Overall, the three dates are quite consistent, each offering high quality examples of New Orleans jazz. Among the highlights are "There's Yes, Yes in Your Eyes," "Shim-Me ... Read More:

The band is called John Gill's Dixieland Serenaders and though the name fairly indicates the lively nature of the music, it does not really reflect the authenticity of the traditional jazz on this CD - it is truly great ! The choice of numbers includes many early standards, and the style of playing is reminiscent of revivalist Lu Watter's Yerba Buena Band with 2 trumpets and itself based on the great King Oliver's line up - traditional jazz lives on.

There are many superb numbers, not only from King Oliver, but also from Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton and more of that era. The CD starts with an exciting approach to "Weather Bird Rag" and goes on to such as "Zulu's Ball", "Alligator Hop" and "Billy ... Read More:
