George Lewis was one of the earlier New Orleans jazz clarinetists who's sound and method of playing clearly influenced the likes of Acker Bilk, Sammy Rimmington and many others. This recording is very special and could have wide appeal. I am not a religious man but I would confidently place a large bet on my own opinion being right that if one or two of the best hymns on this CD were given reasonable air time on popular radio it would hit the top of the charts very quickly. Music : George Lewis and His New Orleans Stompers
In an era when music is often reduced to the lowest common denominator, it's great to listen to musicians who seem to enjoy playing and consequently put their heart and soul into it.
Whatever your taste, there is something here for you: there's the foot-stomping "Gettysburg March" (three different versions!) and the more reflective "Lord, Lord, Lord, You Sure Been Good To Me". One is soon caught up in the mood created by fine musicians whose range covers spiritual hymns such as "Walking With The King" to the secular "Savoy Blues". I love every one of the sixteen tracks. Sit back, enjoy and marvel!

The Squadronaires, officially the RAF Dance Orchestra, comprised some of the best British jazz oriented musicians of the early Forties and while they had to perform and record their share of pop ephemera, they are mostly remembered for the jazz they played. While a cross section of their commercially recorded output is documented on ASV Living Era, this selection presents material drawn from broadcasts, transcriptions and live performances between 1943-1945.
The Squads could't be blamed for not trying: they played their pants off to sound like their American peers (Glenn Miller and Sam Donahue), but they nowhere manage to capture that free flowing, almost nonchalant and smooth swinging quality that Donahue and the Navy Band especially ... Read More:
