The music on this recording romps along with tremendous drive thanks to the class rhythm section, Johnny Bastable, Ron Ward and Pete Ridge. The then 22 year old Sammy Rimington is strongly featured, it's a real showcase for his young talent. Goeff Cole gets plenty of opportunity to show that he's one of the best N.O. trombonists around. A very well balanced recording for a live performance, the only surprise is the half hearted response of the audience to some outstanding authentic New Orleans performances. Ken is on brilliant form throughout. There is a disappointing fade out on the last track "Who's Sorry Now?", apparently owing to lack of disc space. This CD features one of Chris Barber's best bands with early enthusiastic Pat Halcox, scintillating Monty Sunshine, and first appearance of Graham Burbidge; plus Ottilie Patterson sneaking onto the final track. Concerts with live recordings form a substantial proportion of Chris Barber's jazz output, and these have often been cleverly contrived with a wide range of guests. Here the flamboyant gospel singer, Sister Rosetta Tharpe contributes to 7 of the 14 tracks. She was probably second only to Mahalia Jackson for her commanding stage presence and powerful singing. Sister Rosetta Tharpe brought religious music into public consciousness from the late 1930s onwards, and numbers on this CD were recorded in 1957 at the height of her powers.
