I remember this album when it came out in 1965. I wasn't interested in the controversy - the music just sounded great. I had never heard anything like it...... I still don't know exactly how you would describe this style. Anyway , when it came out it became iconic for some people, which includes me.
Although it's of it's time it's still unquestionably listenable today - interpret the lyrics if that is your whim - you don't have to, in my opinion, to merely enjoy the album at first listening.

"Want One" is, all things considered, Rufus Wainwright's best album. It is here that he perfected his baroque take on musical magic realism (which he fairly sustained through to "Want Two"), before his frankly surprising creative collapse on "Release The Stars" and subsequent escape into the qualitatively inconsistent cabaret pastiche of "Rufus Does Judy".
Here, proceedings get started on a pleasantly leftist note with "Oh What A World". The appropriately named "I Don't Know What It Is" cranks things up considerably, but keeps its meaning to itself. The pleasant electronic keyboard extravaganza of "Vicious World" recalls Stevie Wonder, while "Pretty Things" proves Rufus and plain piano go quite well together on their own.

The Haar which rolls off the north sea and obliterates the islands and fishing boats from those who would stand on Fife's East Neuk shores appears to act as some sort a magic creative cloak if we measure the incredible number of musicians and artists who have gained inspiration from the land and sea in this wind blown corner of Scotland.
One of East Neuk most famous sons...relatively speaking...is the cat loving, real ale quaffing scruff bag, James Yorkston who has marked out his territory from fellow Fence Collective artists like the more rock/pop orientated King Creosote by virtue of the quality of his songwriting and his musicianship which is certainly more traditionally folk based than the aforementioned KC who nevertheless is a huge talent in his own right. ... I have been there since the beginning and I love Donovan. This is a good film that could have been so much better if the director had a bit more experience. Instead he had to make some artistic statements, one being the dotted frames. I hate them and they disturb me so much that I cannot watch more than ten minutes at a time. I recognize the idea behind it, but it was a very bad idea so please release a version without that irritating frame.

Chic Murray was Billy Connolly's Father ... he must have been!

This was bought for someone who loved Chic Murray and told me he would not enjoy just listening to him because "you had to see him, his act was full of pulled faces and innocent comic gestures".

How wrong you can be!!! This is a very funny comic CD if you have a 'dry' sense of humour!

I remember hearing Billy Connolly saying that he admired, and was inspired by Chic Murray, now I know why!

If you like your humour dry and smut free this is great, very funny, very innocent but very suggestive without being offensive.

There's many a good tune played on an old fiddle, try it!

Worth the price of admission for Gaudete alone, this is a good solid folk album, you can picture the lead singer resting his chin on his hand as he nasally crafts each track. For someone new to Span, it is a grower, which is always a sign of quality in an album.

If I have one gripe, it's that several songs, and 'All Around My Hat' in particular, tend to go a bit 'Quo' when they get over-excited. This is of the time, and to a degree the Span signature, but I find it an unnecessary blot on an otherwise great CD.

To save space and time I'll say that Juan Mobili's review of this album is spot on, but I have few things to add. Firstly Lila's live show is excellent. The next time she and her fine band la Misteriosa are on tour do whatever you can to go to see them. The band arrangements are very strong too, beautifully mixing elements of many styles and traditions in a way that perfectly complements Lila's singing. My personal favourite on this disc is Ojo de Culebra, her duet with La Mari of the Spanish nuevo flamenco band Chambao.
