I'm no world music expert, but from time to time something comes along from outside the English speaking world that demands my attention. 'Aman Iman' is such an album. These Touareg musicians from the Western Sahara create a music whose 'otherness' is obvious, yet which is immediately accessible to western sensibilities. Their music evokes the solitude of the desert and the loneliness of exile, and yet is life affiriming and joyous. It's a thrumming, hypnotic, even foot-stomping sound, not obviously African, with arabic influences and hints of the blues, and deserves a wider audience.

For me, this is maybe his best album, although it's quite hard to quantify the guy's output as he has been so prolific over what must be a 45 year career, and his material has veered from r'n'b to jazz, and on to traditional, country and several points in between. Although recorded in America, a lot of the tracks seem very influenced by Ireland, and I believe he moved back to live there around this time. As with many of his albums, the lyrics are open to interpretation. I've read various tomes dealing with this, and I've always ended up more confused than when I started. When is the world going to wake up to the genius of Rodney Crowell. The title alludes to his former life as a main stream country artist who began to look inwards, a track on The Outsider may be the key, and produced The Houston Kid. He laments on The Outsider that he will never write like Dylan, but his last four albums are, in my view, and I am a big Dylan fan, far superior to the last three lauded Dylan albums in every respect. This is an artist at the peak of his powers, using well honed techniques to produce works of emotional maturity backed by a group of wonderful musicians. It is time for the nature of music reviews - at least for popular music - to change. There's no need any longer to read a review to help you decide if you want to buy an album. All of these tracks can be heard on various places online - either in part or in full, often in different arrangements, sometimes in video - and the lyrics too are freely available. So you can listen, and read, before you decide whether to buy. The traditional reviewer role of helping you decide whether or not this music will be for you, is redundant. Martyn is perhaps one of the most erratic recording artists, a reflection presumably of the ups and downs in his own life. As is well documented, 'Grace & Danger' corresponds with one of these troughs, and has resulted in an album which is staggeringly perfect in its artistic and musical execution. The mid-section 'denial' trio of songs beginning with 'Sweet Little Mystery' are ones I return to with depressing regularity. They are sublimely beautiful, and worth the price of the CD alone. Phil Collins and John Giblin are the most wonderfully intuitively rhythm section,so much so that I almost forgive Collins for being both in Genesis and writing Face Value, but nothing is quite that good. this is just a fantastic blend of different genres of music. the music is pure joy. if you really want to enjoy this, get a dance partner and head out to the local salsa dance club with this CD. simply brilliant stuff. recommended.

A great review (as always) from Mark Barry but I have to disagree with the comments regarding DVD Audio. I would guess a large proportion of people whom these types of reissues are aimed at DO have the ability to play high res formats such as DVD-A and SACD. I'm one of those people and i'm pleased that a major label still thinks it's viable to issue archive releases in this format. The standard CD may be good (and it certainly is) but the high resolution version on the DVD-A is absolutely spectacular. I have never heard stereo imaging so accurate and the clarity of each instrument is possibly the best I have experienced on ANY format.
