I'll be brief as I'm still getting into the album, but what an album this is. I bought Five Leaves Left years ago on my crusade to pick up as many of Channel 4's top 100 albums as I could, though I only actually became familiar with it this summer, during which time I developed a serious appreciation for the young man's unique voice and those baffling guitar fingerings. After a surprise playing of "Hazey Jane II" on Radio 2 one Friday, I was reminded of my Nick Drake quest and quickly bought Bryter Layter on Thursday last. Great ! Superb ! Fantastic ! I agree that picture could have been better, but music overcomes it all ! Something not seen. We in Croatia would say "prava festa" (true fiesta) for all of people in the venue: the musitians and the audience, and therefore all the people who watch it on DVD.... Really must have DVD.

I bought this CD on the back of a review in "the Week." It is a fusion of latin and jazz, and she has the most wonderful husky voice. A joy to listen to!

This album can in no way be described as groundbreaking-but who cares-it takes the best parts of 'Smile' and builds upon them-for me 'Smile' was good and at times great, but it didn't quite work as a whole, whereas this album most definitely does and to be honest there's not a bad track on it: 1.The Devils Beat-Not a great choice of single, but I do like it and it probably is the most original track. 7.5/10 2.Shape I'm In-Generic pop and I love it! Catchy and melodic; brill vocals! 9/10 3.Wounded Hearts-My least favourite song on the album-forgettable. 6/10 4.Saturday Night-Catchy pop ditty! 8/10 5.Beatbox-Growing on me immensely, an intelligent song. 8/10 6.Remote Control Me-Great fun and what Sandi does absolutely ... Tracks one by one that keep on getting better. Excellent to drive with in the early morning watching the sun rising enjoying the breeze. Worth getting in your library of CDs or Ipod. 5*****

I have refrained from writing a review of this CD too soon as I wanted to give it enough listens to really try and get to grips with it. However after a couple of years of repeated attempts, I am afraid that despite all the hype, this really isn't a great album by any stretch of the imagination. As someone else here noted, if this didn't have Dylan's name attached to it, do you REALLY think it would have made ANY kind of splash at all? Thsi is music for Gramps to shuffle and sip a Mint Julip on the back porch to, it's certainly not a fitting 'return to form' as so many keep repeatedly trying to make us believe (reminds me of all Bowie's recent releases ALL being a return to form.....) One of the best CDs ever for beating the blues. Just infectious tunes that carry you along - the Proclaimers have never been fashionable but they're extremely good at what they do.

This is by far Enigma's best album! One track after another simply amazing! Cretu on vocals superb!

I have to admit that I am not a great Dylan fan. I adore Jimi Hendrix version of 'All Along the Watchtower' and Nina Simone's version of 'I Shall Be Released'. Yet when I listen to 'Desire' I can suddenly suspend my previous preconceptions and understand some of Dylan's appeal. Starting off with 'Hurricane', a superb indictement of judicial Racism, with lyrics which really hit their target. The rest of the album concerns some far more personal material, such as the last track 'Sara'concerning his wife whom he was on the point of divorcing, a beautifully direct love song, with sublime lyrics. The rest of the tracks seem to dwell on unfufilled love 'One More Cup of Cofee' or 'Mozambique' or to tales about various rough diamonds who seem to be bordering on outlaw existence, such ... Some influential voices will be dismayed, even horrified, by this combination of Issa Bagayogo's authentic, man-from-the-country sound and a series of propulsive rhythm tracks made from programmed beats and keyboards. I stand with the choir on the other side of the room, to sing the praises of an impressive and consistently enjoyable album from yet another marvellous and unique artist from Mali. How do you say 'it gets better with every play' without it sounding like a cliche? I give up. Perhaps the closest parallel is to Amadou & Mariam's 2005 album, produced by Manu Chao, although the productions of Willie Mitchell in the early Seventies also come to mind - it's intriguing to imagine Al Green or Ann Peebles slipping into some of these arrangements.
