I actually am addicted to this album. First heard it twenty years ago and loved it then, but time passed and I forgot about it. Bought it again on CD two years ago and I'm still addicted. There's rarely a day I'm not listening to it on my Pod. It's the perfect antidote to the mass of rubbish that's churned out every day on the radio. This is music that reconnects you to great songwriting, musicianship and, in some ways, to yourself.

Karma ? Yin and Yang ? Synchronicity ? Who Know's.

What I do know for sure, however, is that having spent
a couple of painfully wasted hours listening to Santogold's execrable
debut album I was very ready for some honest musical sustenance.

I found it here In Ryan Bingham's most recent album 'Mescalito'.

Comparisons abound but try to put them to one side.
Let's listen to Mr Bingham on his own evident merits.

Somehow honesty and authenticity shines through in all
music of worth and this is indeed a very worthy little album.

The grit and gravel in our hero's voice serves his material well.
Whether in slippin' and slidin' stompers such as 'Bread and Water'
and "Dollar ... Read More:

Pop music isn't really a literary medium - only Morrissey at the moment really compares as a lyricist - but straight from their first album, the word-of-mouth success "Tigermilk", Belle and Sebastian's songs were more poetic vignettes than the your run of the mill pop that clogs up the charts and radio like so much musical cholesterol.

In Belle and Sebastian's second album, things are more refined - the musical pallete is more sparse, with none of the electronics that appeared on "Tigermilk" or the subsequent EPs. It's straightforward guitars (accoustic, of course, but also a smattering of jangling electric guitar, as in "Stars of Track and Field"), piano, and some understated orchestration (none of the rich arrangements that would colour their third album, "The ... No surprises here, of course -- Enya didn't achieve new age superstardom by challenging anyone's expectations. This album is every bit as hushed, lovely, and soulless as everything else she's ever done; like a perfect angel food cake, it's sweet, soft, and utterly lacking in nutritive substance. There's nothing the matter with angel food cake, of course, and there's also nothing really the matter with The Memory of Trees, though its Druidic theme does smell awfully trendy (nothing was quite so hip as neopaganism in 1995), and it steers so strictly the same melodic and textural course she's been following throughout her solo career that you're tempted to wonder why anyone would want to spend the money on what amounts to a complete rehash of her earlier work. While other cultural influences ... Read More:

Even the much-maligned (by me) 'bonus tracks' on 'TNSGATR' are good. Unforced. Segueing with the album proper so you don't see the join. With no hint of that desperate lets-cram-any-old-garbage on, and watch the fans cream themselves at the very notion of 'previously unreleased'- there's usually a good reason why things are `unreleased....'
The album itself perfection. Soulful, powerful, lyrical, in fact everything you could want from a music, regardless of your preferences or bias. This level of haunting beauty has `broad' appeal.
Denny sings like a Guinnessed-up chorister. Her voice, (inspiration to every-one from Stevie Nicks to the criminally under-rated Gay Woods {!}) is sharp and worldly. You can sense her vibrancy as a person from the wacky but intense 'Brit Folk World', a ... Read More:

Agreed, this has been done before. In 1975, to accompany a book on the story of how folk transitioned into rock, and 20 years later in the 6-CD New Electric Muse and New Electric Muse II on Sanctuary. That a re-branded return to the first golden age of British folk rock works so well in this latest incarnation is testament to the skill of writer/compiler David Suff and some unsurpassable music from the Island and Transatlantic catalogues. The moment when in 1966 at Manchester's Free Trade Hall, Dylan swapped his acoustic guitar for a Stratocaster to a fan's cry of "Judas!" is often cited as marking the birth of electric folk. But Suff's journey starts over a decade earlier in Lonnie Donegan's `Rock Island Line' and the early `60s' recordings of Davy Graham, Jansch and Shirley Collins, tripping from ... Read More:

I love Suzanne Vega - she is probably remembered by her more famous tracks, Luka and Tom's Diner, but her album provides us with a wealth of beautiful, meaningful lyrics and her striking and soulful voice. My favourites tracks are Fancy Poultry/ Ironbound and Language, with beautiful lyrics such as 'if language were liquid, it would be rushing in, instead here we are in a silence more eloquent than any words could ever be'. Lovely album.
