Hey, can this lady sing!!! Pumped through expensive speakers on my old steam driven amplifier and CD player, her voice rocked the room. It was like being visited by half a dozen different women. Cleopatra popped in a couple of times to tell me her woes. Alminera sang of her despair (far, far better than most I have heard). Medea appeared to tell me of her love and her jealousy. I thought that Armida's anger was going to bring the walls down - boy that girl is ANGRY. Semele, falling under Zeus' spell captivated me and was captivated. One, of course, shouldn't be sexist but to be treated to the sight of such a beautiful woman appearing as all these beautiful women would, indeed, be a pleasure. Whilst Nicholas McGegan has had his critics over some of his Goettingen recordings, it cannot be denied that he has rescued some of Handel's finest arias and operas from the dustbin of History. And here, he has a fine cast of singers all re-living the repertoire of some of the best singers of the 18th century - Lisa Saffer sings arias by Cuzzoni, Drew Minter arias by Senesino, David Thomas arias for Montagnana, and Lorraine Hunt arias by Durastanti. The excellent Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra provide superb accompaniment for each singer, and the sound quality is very good across all four discs. I was quite unprepared by Miss Fleming's career heretofore to be bowled over by this collection of Handel arias, but I was. I was no fan of her less than 'authentic' Baroque style on the complete 'Alcina' set, and Fleming herself is the first one to admit that her perspective on singing is general, Romantic even, rather than specialized. Anyway, this time around she positively shines and glows. Complete identification with the Baroque idiom, whatever that means, is what informs this recording. The wonderful conductor Harry Bicket was obviously a creative person to develop musical ideas with, and his tempi are theatrical and vivacious. As a real fan of the wonderful Renee, and having seen her perform live, I was disappointed with this collection of Handel arias. She is perhaps more suited to other composers, and I am afraid to say that a few of the tracks had me reaching for the remote control (Never previously done with this superb singer). I look forward to the new Jazz album of hers that I have ordered, as this is a crossover that she can do well (unlike some other classical singers). Borrow a copy of this Handel collection before you buy, there are better ones I am afraid to say!
