Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon, dubbed the 'Golden Couple' pair up for an album of beautiful operatic duets. Both singers possess glorious voices and each selection/scene captures the listener, with even two unfamilar items alongside the standard repertoire. I urge people to rather purchase the limited edition package that contains a bonus DVD, which shows the making of the album, as well as the music video for the Boheme duet, directed by Vincent Patterson.

I approached this CD with caution given the hype that has surrounded recent appearances of both singers. I must confess that contrary to my expectations I was deeply moved by the singing here which recalls other great operatic couples of the past, Callas and di Stefano, Tebaldi and del Monaco. The recording has rarely been far from my CD player for the past two weeks.

As with the legendary couples from the past, there is something uneven about the two voices. Netrebko's voice is not a warm voice but is beautifully focused, always on the note and has to my ears a dark unjuicy quality. It is a stunning voice. Villazon, by contrast, has a voice that could hardly be described as beautiful the way that Corelli's, Pavarotti's or Domingo's ... Read More:

Yes, the pundits were right: this is the Boheme to end all Bohemes - a performance of such virtuosity, such dazzling technical aplomb as to beggar belief and defy description. It demonstrates Bocelli's worthiness to stand alongside Russell Watson as one of the world's greatest tenors.
I heard part of this recording on Radio 3, when the reviewers were doing their best to be polite about it. When I heard Bocelli croaking his way through 'Che gelida manina' I could hardly believe my ears. It amazes me that people can listen to this and not notice that there's something seriously amiss.
In my personal, subjective opinion, the Tebaldi/Bergonzi/Serafin recording is the one to go for, regardless of whether you are new to opera or not. Please ... Read More:

Although I dearly wanted Tebaldi, Bergonzi & del Monaco in these marvellous operas, I fought shy of buying this set for weeks after reading the previous reviews as I understood that these were all mono recordings although Boheme and Butterfly had been re-recorded in stereo. Eventually I couldn't resist (especially at some of the marketplace prices).
I thought I'd start with the earliest recording - Manon Lescaut from 1954. Imagine my sheer unalloyed joy when glorious Decca ffss twin-channel sound poured out of the speakers. I hastily checked the booklet and the box, but no word of what might be stereo or mono - then I looked at all the individual disks. Each one declares itself to be Stereo. Yeehah! I have hours of Puccini in classic Decca ripe stereophony ... Read More:
