I have gained many hours of pleasure from this set. Dorati rarely disappoints. The only very small fly in the ointment is that some of the recordings sound a little dated now (from a techncial point of view); but still very much a must buy for all fans of Haydn and his symphonies.

Well played and recorded. I think the opus 1 trios fare best and are works of some consequence which I had not previously heard. Recording quality is excellent but unfortunately I had a real problem with the Archduke which is the key piece for me. The balance of the instruments is difficult to accept but probably bearable in the other pieces. Piano dominates violin and cello. Third movement is good- one of the best- but elsewhere one wonders why violinist and cellist put up with this. In the final movement the violin's tripping contribution two thirds of the way through is pathetically quiet and has little effect. I think the performance is excellent, but the tape was transferred to digital nearly 20 years ago, and sounds like it. This recording deserves a new, 24-bit transfer. Pity Decca don't do SACDs.

I think the performance is excellent, but the tape was transferred to digital nearly 20 years ago, and sounds like it. This recording deserves a new, 24-bit transfer. Pity Decca don't do SACDs.

Considering the myth surrounding Carlos Kleiber, I was severely disappointed by his interpretation of Schubert's 3rd symphony. All the tempos are way too fast, sometimes absurdely so. In some instances, you can even hear the players wanting to play slower but being pushed on by the conductor. In contrast, the ritartandi are exaggerated. And the balance of instruments is not natural, it sounds like a lot of changes have been made after the recording in the mixing room. The Menuett, originally a dance tempo, is so fast that nobody would want to dance to it. If it weren't for the superb sound of the Vienna Philharmonic (and of course the genius of the composer) you could not listen to this music at all.
