I bought this as a gift for my niece, since I wanted her to be educated about classical music as she was on her way to college. Ended up buying two copies as I found I loved it so much. Normally I like to pick and choose my orchestras, composers, and conductors, but this collection has jujst about everything. Also, I'd never bought some of the more "popular" items (Strauss and Grieg) as I'd heard them a million times, but now I have them and the performances are all great. This truly has a smattering of it all, and if you're not a classical music lover, it's bound to turn you on to the stuff.

When Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis were in Boston last fall, I attended the concert that featured some of Mozart's violin sonatas from these recordings. While I enjoyed the immediacy of the live performance, I felt that Ms. Mutter tended to overwhelm Mr. Orkis both in volume and style. That was a shame because the piano parts in Mozart's violin sonatas are always at least as important as the violin parts. Having been a little disappointed, I was, however, wowed during the encores when suddenly a balance appeared. Ms. Mutter was quieter and more restrained and Mr. Orkis seemed less constrained. It was magical. Thus encouraged, I bought a copy of this CD set, and both performers graciously autographed it. Read More:

During the course of his career Gulda earned a reputation and as an enfant terrible of the classical scene, a reputation which he appears to have cultivated quite assiduously. Yet back in the 1950s, as the notes to this edition point out, Gulda was regarded as the most promising young talent of his day ahead of names like Brendel. Listen to this and you can hear why. Gulda's Beethoven is robust and forthright. His playing is muscular, his tempi are generally quite fast and he seems on the whole more interested in illuminating the structure of the pieces rather than their lyricism when this is called.
