This 13 CD box set is box 2 of the 17 set 180 CD Philips Complete Mozart Edition. It contains the complete Serenades for Orchestra, performed by the Academy of St Martin-in-the-fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner and the dances and marches performed by the Wiener Mozart Ensemble conducted by Willi Boskovsky. Among many jewels in the serenades is the K525 Serenade in G "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" which must rank as one of the most loved pieces of classical music of all time. The fame of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" tends to overshadow the rest of Mozart's output of serenades, many of which are it's equal and well worth investigating. Among the Dances and Marches the many sets of German Dances stand out for their sparkling tunes and merry tempos. Read More:

A lot of people might think "Wow, that's expensive!", but it's one man's entire life's work. This a collection of the greatest known music ever composed in the history of the world and is an utter bargain. Philips have done a superb job of compiling up the works and there isn't a single dud performance in the whole set. Stop buying individual CDs and bitty-piecey collections, do yourself a favour and buy the whole lot - it's cheaper in the long run. The solo pieces, the orchestral pieces, and the choral pieces are all performed excellently, whether by famous players and conductors or by lesser knowns. It may be true that there may be better renditions around of some pieces, but I don't think you'll be disappointed with what is here. Read More:

This is a most enjoyable recording (made in 1980). The performance by Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields led by Neville Marriner, at the peak of their powers, is very stylish and the tempi are well judged. Some world-famous soloists participate - Henryk Szeryng (violin), Michala Petri (recorder), Jean-Pierre Rampal (flute) and Heinz Holliger (oboe). There are many "period performance" recordings of this work by now, some of which are good. However, when you listen to a performance using modern instruments like this one under review, I wonder if period performance enthusiasts (including myself) are missing something important for the sake of pursuing "authenticity".
