Some people consider Beethoven to have been the greatest composer ever. I prefer Mozart, but Beethoven gave him a run for his money. At his best, Beethoven is unbeatable; at his worst he's an acquired taste. This, being the complete set of his works, contains all of his best, worst, and everything in between.

Everyone is familiar with Beethoven's symphonies, a few of his sonatas, and maybe an overture or two, but who has heard his versions of British folk songs? Would you be surprised to be thumbing through a catalogue of Beethoven music and be presented with "Norah of Balamagairy", "The Lovely Lass of Inverness", and "Paddy O'Rafferty"?

If you like Beethoven then this is a must-buy. If your only experience is what you've ... Read More:

Richter's performance may not be note-perfect, but who cares if Beethoven sonatas are played with such intensity and profundity? After listening to Richter's uncompromising, risk-taking accounts, performances by those German music expert, Uchida, Brendel, Schiff, Kemp etc, sounds too tame and intellectual.

During the course of his career Gulda earned a reputation and as an enfant terrible of the classical scene, a reputation which he appears to have cultivated quite assiduously. Yet back in the 1950s, as the notes to this edition point out, Gulda was regarded as the most promising young talent of his day ahead of names like Brendel. Listen to this and you can hear why. Gulda's Beethoven is robust and forthright. His playing is muscular, his tempi are generally quite fast and he seems on the whole more interested in illuminating the structure of the pieces rather than their lyricism when this is called. This approach is the antithesis of Kempff, but Gulda brings it off perfectly. A real oddity in the set is Gulda's performance of the first movement ... Read More:

Being used to heavy weight renditions of Beethoven Sonatas by Russian masters like Richter, Gilels, Vedernikov, Neuhaus, at first listening I had an impression that Barenboim's Beethoven is a little too light-weight, especially earlier sonatas, but after repeated listening I was quite taken by the noble beauty and delicacy of his playing. Waldstein, Moonlight & Pathetique Sonatas are exceptionally well played with refinement and inspiration.

Only thing I can not stand in this set is Appassionata Sonata played like Chopin Nocturne, which made me nearly fall asleep! I like unpredictable and uncompromising Beethoven played with extreme contrasts by Richter and Gilels, but Barenboim's interpretation was a revelation and quite refreshing ... Read More:
