To my ears, this is the best recording of Le Nozze di Figaro. Boehm's pacing is, as ever in Mozart, immaculate. Prey as Figaro is ideally weighty and not too funny(why should Figaro be funny with his suspicions?), Fischer-Dieskau is as refined as one would expect but he's also scheming and villainous and the two tenors are excellent in their roles. The Marzelline sounds just the right age - not an old matron or a young girl - and has the perfect degree of hardness in the voice. Mathis' Susanna is charming, witty and romantic and Troyanos is passionate and confused as Cherubino. The star here, though, is definitely Janowitz as the Contessa - her voice is so beautiful (and ideal for Mozart and Richard Strauss) it defies description ... Read More:

James Levine conducts so beautifully that the music's comedic appeal shines! I just finished performing this opera and I found this CD to be a great reference.

This is my favourite Rossini opera, principally because the spirit of Mozart is very much evident. Bartoli is wonderful.

This is a lovely viennese recording; Kleiber's conducting highlights aspects that other conductors do not. I have seen Figaro five times, I think, and am looking forward to seeing it a sixth time shortly. One simply never tires of Mozart's Da Ponte's operas. For example, the 30 minute (or so) scence in Act 1, when Cherubino is hiding in the Countessa's cupboard is, in my view, the most extraordinary scence ever in opera, the music literally soars, one's heart simply rejoices, one deeply emphathises with Figaro and the Countessa and simply delights in the way they get the better of the Count -one experiences a deep belly full of joy.
