Os Mutantes were inspired by psychedelic rock, but had no access to the musical instruments and studio effects available in the west, improvising with various Heath-Robinson gadgets constructed of such things as sewing machine motors. The result is a frenetic sound-stew of tropicalia and psych-out wierdness: An obvious influence on Beck, for one.

Os Mutantes were formed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1965, and were the forerunners of the Brazillian culture phenomenon known as Tropicalia. But what is this Tropicalia you speak? Well Tropicalia was a cultural revolution in Brazil in the mid to late sixties which not only affected music, but all areas of the arts, giving pieces a more deeper meaning and giving its creators a reason to push the boundaries for what was possible. There is no bigger example of the Tropicalia movement then Os Mutantes' debut in 1968, their self titled album is little known outside of Brazil, but I have had the album 4 weeks and I am absolutely smitten by it, which has left me thinking that if this was an English speaking album, this would probably be heralded ... For fans of the tropicalia band Os Mutantes, May of 2006 was a momentous time -- the band reunited for the first time since 1978. Specifically, they played a long live performance in the at London's Barbican Arts Centre, sparking off a brief tour. And in these songs, they're in wonderful form -- shimmering, richly raucous pop music wound with colourful rock'n'roll, returning to the songs that made them musical legends. No wonder the crowds scream as they play. In fact, they scream a lot during the opening number, "Don Quixote" -- as a stately, epic march plays, you can hear whoops, yowls and cheers over the drums and horns. Then suddenly there's a triangle, a flute.... and it melts into a complex, dramatic, colourful rock intro. Read More:
