Karajan live is a comparatively rare commodity and so this new live Fidelio from 1962 ought to be cause for celebration. However, here is one recording the maestro would definitely not have sanctioned, had he been alive for consultation before its release. Sound is ok. The problem is the overall air of tense nervousness. Leonore was a new role for Ludwig and she was understandably anxious about singing a soprano part. Clearly it is a struggle and often she simply comes across as loud. Vickers also has a bad night (apparently he was a bit under the weather). The spoken dialogue is either a distant murmuring or hammy theatrical overstatement. Leonore III and the final scene are the best things, together with the Fidelio ... Read More:
