THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS DISC LIES IN THE "THAIS" SELECTION. ALTHOUGH LISTED INNOCUOUSLY AS "BALLET SUITE" IT IS IN FACT THE LONG "TEMPTATION OF ST. ANTHONY" MIMODRAME WHICH APPEARS IN THE LAST ACT, WHERE ATHANAEL IS TEMPTED IN A DREAM SEQUENCE.APPARENTLY ONLY PERFORMED FOR THE FIRST 2 PERFORMANCE OF THE OPERA, IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY SUPPRESSED. A FULL ACCOUNT OF IT IS GIVEN IN THE "L'AVANT SCENE DE L'OPERA" ISSUED DEVOTED TO "THAIS". MARRINER PLAYS THIS MUSIC DELICIOUSLY AND BRINGS OUT ALL IT'S FLAVOUR. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR GENERAL LISTENERS ALSO, AS THE "CID" AND "CENDRILLON" SELECTIONS SPARKLE.

These symphonies are pure joy from start to end, particularly the First with its debt to Bizet, its energetic melodies and rhythmic bounce. The ballet music from Faust is also really appealing and a lovely way to make a first exploration of a very fine opera. Performances are brightly polished and all concerned are clearly having a high old time.

I greatly admire those Titans of eccentric conductors, Bernstein, Stokowski, Celibidache, Tennstedt for their courage to break rules in the conservative world of classic music. But...these distorted accounts of Tchaikovsky Symphonies are beyond my comprehension, even though I tried my best to appreciate Bernstein's intention. 5&6th seem to be worst affected by vulgar exaggeration and painfully slow tempi in wrong places. Pathetique Symphony is truly pathetic, reduced to monstrous parody of the great music. This sort of over-exaggeration can be effective in Mahler's music, but not for Tchaikovsky. I debated for quite a while over whether or not to buy this SACD, as I'm not a great fan of Gergiev - nor is the Pathetique one of my favourite Tchaikovsky symphonies (I prefer the Fifth and First). However I'm glad I did, as this is really an excellent live performance, given a very fine recording, in which you hear rather more of the hall's acoustic in multi-channel than in stereo. Gergiev here manages to enshrine the true spirit of Tchaikovsky, coupled with flawless orchestral execution by the VPO. The result has the freshness of Karajan's mid-1960s DG recording (by far the best of his Pathetiques) and much of the Slavonic intensity of Mravinsky in his recording made at about the same time. ...something has been lost in translation with regard to the Italian reviewer who gave this set 2 measly stars but his review cannot be taken seriously.Karajan's Tchaikovsky cycle is regarded as definitive by many critics and 5 stars is a must.As for symphonies 2 and 5 being on separate discs that is pretty much par for the course with these symphonies and certainly no reason for a lower rating.Also,I thought the booklet was fine and don't understand the criticism of it at all.A superb set.
