I had a hard time finding good music in the 80's to enjoy, and tended to favour the likes of Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, the Waterboys, and of course Prefab Sprout, over what was happening in the mainstream world of groups like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet - all of which was more of a triumph of style over substance, in my humble opinion.

Anyway, one of the real delights of the mid eighties was Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen, which I played to death for about 2 years! It has to be one of the most consistent gems of pop music, and the release really brought home to anyone who had failed to notice, what a superb songwriting talent we have with Paddy MacAloon - that rare ability to write not just great lyrics, but to be able to wrap ... This album consists mainly of slow tracks but not all are typical ballads. Some are soulful reflections on life and relationships. The music itself is a mix of neo classical soul and modern R n B. This combination may lead to audiences responding to the familiarity of the modern beat and then eschewing the other creative material.

Basically your ability to appreciate this music depends on your ablity to appreciate talent in song writing, vocal delivery and the arrangement of strong vocals with the right accompaniment. If you can appreciate these, this album wil inspire you and will call you back time and again, even in 5 or ten years. If you like to feel a beat and you 'know what you like' - and that is modern mass produced R n B - you may ... Read More:

I guess I will be playing this album till I die and will never get tired of it. There is not a bad track, and remarkably has stood the test of time. Great music, incredible lyrics, and great production by Thomas Dolby.
Goodye Lucille is my favourite, and has some wonderful lyrics, it should be mandatory listening to those moping after a relationship breakdown.
"Lifes not complete till your heart skips a beat"
Truly a classic album. If its not in your collection, then you are not a music fan.

Don't buy this twofer, as the first issue of Steve McQueen on CD was mastered in such a way that all the life was sucked out of it. I had mine for years and only listened to it once.

Instead, buy Steve Mcqueen: Legacy Edition/Remastered & Expanded, which sounds fabulous, and much more like the original LP, and you get a second disc with it too, of acoustic versions of the songs, so you're still getting two discs for the price of one!!

We Prefab Sprout fans don't need more anthologies! We claim for an album with new songs!!! Anyway, I appreciate this 'new' CD pays tribute to almost-hidden jewels like 'Nightingales' or 'Swans', and of course my rating only can be 5 stars, because Prefab Sprout is a 5 stars band in all the senses. But... Paddy, we miss you.

A Barcelona fan who's still perturbed by the Prefab Sprout concert en 1990 at the Palau d'Esports...

This is the US edition of the classic Steve McQueen, released in 1985. (Check out the five-star reviews on Amazon of this album.)

Legal issues with the estate of Mr McQueen prevented his name being used, so the name was changed. The song "Faron Young" is called "Faron" on the sleeve notes. The music is exactly the same, with the addition of three good-quality "B-sides" at the end.

Sprout fans will be interested in the 2007 release of a "Legacy edition" of this album, rumoured (at the time of writing) to contain acoustic re-workings of the original songs by Paddy McAloon, in addition to re-mastered originals by produced Thomas Dolby.

One of the classic, timeless albums of the 80's by one of England's greatest songwriters. Up ... Read More:
