salim nourallah is a texas based singer-songwriter who also happens to have not an ounce of texas twang in him. born in alton, illinois, raised in el paso, texas, the brothers nourallah were mutually obsessed with the beatles at an extremely young age. many years later they recorded, with boxing gloves and occasional instruments, the indie cult classic, 'nourallah brothers' cd on western vinyl/secretly canadian. that was the year 2000. since then salim has gone on to release 2 full-length solo albums, 'polaroid' in 2004 and now 'beautiful noise' in 2006. salim's focus for the last half of 2004 was creating and recording, 'beautiful noise.' amazingly, salim wrote, recorded, and mixed the entire album himself at his own pleasantry lane studio. ... Love at the Greek is the culmination of energy and vocal maturity at the peak of his career. The Jonathan Livingston seagul medley is in my view the highlight of the album and certainly a valuable add-on to the original album. In this masterpiece he touches the audience with his heart, singing with sheer emotions, true to the sticky note that said "Remember Hal, I don't only want to be his voice, but his heart." Of course, the other songs, such as Glory Road are valuable to any ND collection too.

I have to admit to being a little "one eyed" when it comes to reviewing this particular package. Having been blown away by his stunning "Hot August Night" live recording and the equally admirable "Love At The Greek" concert years later, the modern day Diamond is unfortunately a cabaret act if one is to be honest. Just one look at the venues tells you that - two discs cover his Vegas concerts. Gone is the exciting artist that lit up the 70s, when he actually played his guitar rather than used it as a prop. Bitter anti-Diamond fan? Far from it. I have been a fan for over 25 years, I just don't hide my disappointment like others and pretend he is still the performer he was.
