This is a digitally remastered (ADD) recording which comes out of the process very well with a good dynamic range. The performances are good, with the all-Germanic performers blending together well. The atmospheric slow choir parts are particularly enjoyable. The pace is a little slow for my liking on the 'Dies Irae' and similar parts, but this is a Karajan performance, so if you are happy with his style, you will be happy with this. Just for the record, the label is Deutsche Grammophon Resonance.

My acquaintance with Alkan's Pedal Studies goes back only about three years. Nicholas King (another Alkan organist) provided me with a copy of the Etudes when I came to University and I was staggered by the variety of technical difficulties in them. But they are thrilling to learn and to get your feet around, even if some are contortion-inducing! What is made aware from Bowyer's recording is that they are more than simply "study pieces"; they are important miniatures of great musicality and ingenuity. Personal favourites are the 3rd, with its incredibly tough and impressive fugal structure, and the staccato-legato 4th, but Alkan's keen ability to stir the emotions with a single line of melody is apparent in the 6th.
