It's easy to get swept along in the usual hysteria of Tchaikovsky's turbulent 4th Symphony, but Celi's thoughful, more deliberate manner made me more sympathetic to the sense of near permanent frenzy that is a hallmark of Russian music and literature (e.g. Dostoyevsky) in this period.

The Milhaud Concerto for Marimba is wonderfully trippy, the Wagner excerpts quite impressive, the Mozart Requiem very grand, the Faure Requiem quite touching. Celi's Scheherazade is very imposing and very beautiful, whilst the Prokofiev and Shostakovich symphonies are stripped of their violent and politicised trappings, perhaps to their detriment. The Verdi is fascinating but exhausting, the Bach interminable.
