Mozart's Requiem is one of my favorite pieces of music. Something I have been passionate about for years. I bought this recording on the strength of the orchestra and conductor and was sadly disappointed with it.

The orchestra and choir seem, somehow, to be disjointed and performing apart. This rendition lacks the punch, fire and brimstone that you expect from the Requiem, and in places feels a bit sloppy. That said I don't think the recording itself helped the performance.

If you want a copy of the Requiem to stir the soul I would choose a different version.

Once again, Stephen Layton brings out the very best in Polyphony. Starting with the immortal "Ave Maria" - a better version will be hard to find - through the magic of Bruckners "Mass No 2 in E Minor", to the sublime "Virga Jesse floruit" and beautiful "Pange lingua", I absolutely love this cd. What Layton and Polyphony can do with the simplest of songs is staggerring. They just take you on a journey away from day to day troubles and re-balance everything. Moving, uplifting and beautifully crafted ..... but then, its Layton & Polyphony, you expect no less but always get so much more.

This is a truly excellent set, and at a bargain price. I have loved Tallis's music for many years and have some dearly loved recordings by The Tallis Scholars, the Hillard Ensemble and The Taverner Consort which won't be superseded by this set, but are certainly beautifully complemented by it. The approach of Alistair Dixon and Chapelle du Roi is calm and restrained, and the music glows as a result. The singers are very good, tuning is virtually faultless and the absence or restrained use of vibrato ideal. The overall sound is very warm, by and large, emphasised by resonant acoustics in all the recording venues, and this eight-year project is a very fine achievement which does real justice to one of England's greatest composers.

This is, of course, a reissue of the Signum Classics set with the notes and texts on a CD Rom but costing a third of the price of the original issue!

The music is superb, the recording accoustic perfectly judged, and the performances absolutely first class. Alistair Dixon's direction is ideal. The music is allowed to breathe, is never forced, and the polyphony made absolutely clear - even in the 40 part motet 'Spem in Alium'. One might argue that the performances are slightly 'cool' and lacking in emotion but I think this is good thing. Tallis' music is intensely spiritual and loses some of its transcendal beauty when performed in a romantic way.

I cannot praise this set too highly. Tallis is one of the greatest of ... Read More:
