This is one of my favourite CDs, featuring sacred Venetian choral music written for the splendour of St. Mark's Basilica during the 16th and 17th centuries, and performed by The Sixteen (my personal favourites!).The accompanying notes also give the texts and translations to the tracks, which is helpful and enhances the enjoyment of the performances.

As a teenager in the sixties, George Harrison and Brian Jones introduced most of us to what is now known as World Music. No sooner had we listened to Indian Ragas and Morroccan pipes and realised that there was more to music than blue eyed soul when Missa Luba came along. Of course "If" made the album popular, but it was and still is a major milestone in International music and an album that stands head and shoulders above what we had listened to before and a lot since. This is not just nostalgia, but a recording that gets stronger with every listening. The voices of Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin reach such an addictive high, that it's difficult not to sing along, although I haven't got a clue what the words are! The absolute innocence ... Search : Live from New York City, 1967
In contemporary parlance this would be an "unplugged" concert since all you have is Paul Simon on acoustic guitar while he and Artie (call me "Arthur") Garfunkle blend their voices in sweet two-part harmony. But that misses the main point of this 1967 concert in New York City, which is that Simon & Garfunkle were originally folk singers. That is clear from the start when they open their concert with "He Was My Brother" and sing about a Freedom Rider killed in the South. Both of the songs that will be new to those of us who have all five of the albums they produced during their relative few years together, "You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies" and "A Church is Burning," are definitely in that tradition as well.

This first album to come from the harmonious duo was indeed a flop originally but with their ascendancy to fame, it wasn't long before their fans harked back to this early work. As the cover promises, this album brings you "exciting new sounds in the folk tradition" - a bit of a let down as quite a few of the songs aren't particularly that exciting! Nevertheless the songs that do shine out (Sounds of Silence, Bleeker Street,Wednesday Morning 3AM and the other Paul Simon songs) show the promise of the young writer's creativity, and indeed the pair's harmony arrangements, lighting the way for their first major breakthrough "Homeward Bound". Definiftely worth a listen to for all S&G fans, especially if you can't stand the electric ... Read More:
