When Time Magazine said 'they sing like angels' it was far from an exaggeration. With the seemingly endless supply of operatic voices singing lacklustre versions of `Pie Jesu' these days, the three Priests from Northern Ireland are totally a refreshing revelation. What sets them apart from the rest is their connection to this collection of songs that draws you into their world, leaving you believing every word that they sing. There's most epic and heartfelt version in `Ave Maria'; their 'Irish Blessing' is perfection and the lesser know 'Ecce Sacerdos' is totally captivating. It's not brash or preachy: it's just brilliant music.

I bought this triple CD collection after borrowing the "Requiem" CD from a local library and really enjoying it. Containing as it does not only the Requiem and (very different) the first "Adiemus" volume but also "The Armed Man", I found it an excellent introduction to Karl Jenkins' music. The "Requiem" CD also includes Jenkins' rich "In These Stones Horizons Sing" evocation of Wales - a great bonus. Whilst there are tracks on each CD that I don't really respond to, there is much that I really enjoy and - at the time of writing at least - was able to buy the collection at an astonishingly low bargain price.

A conscientious & comprehensive 2CD reissue. The first disc contains three albums, two of which are notorious. In 1967 someone thought it would be a good idea to record a version of a Catholic Mass complete with choral chanting - done as psychedelic acid-rock! And then follow up by doing the same for Judaism. David Axelrod composed the music & hot band of the moment, The Electric Prunes, brought in to perform - except being a garage band they couldn't play the complex music and didn't want to anyway. The men in suits at the company decided this was no problem - the Electric Prunes were sacked but their name kept on the sleeves as a hip brand, while Axelrod arranged & produced the albums with his top LA session musician buddies. The first Silvestrov release by Hänssler Classic features a splendid recital by Jenny Lin of some of his piano pieces. Silvestrov has composed a large amount of short pieces for piano during the last decade, starting with what has become a kind of signature piece, The Messenger, a beautiful rendition of which closes off this disc. Playing this music has everything to do with feel rather than pianistic virtuosity. As can be expected from this composer, there's a predominance of postlude-type compositions that are slightly melancholic but nevertheless manage to evoke a sense of joie-de-vivre as well.
