Search : Train to Skaville: Anthology 1966-1975

This new twofer of Trojan gives us the best of the Ethiopians between 1966-1975, after their Studio One period. The Ethiopians always were apart from the main reggae scene. Leader Leonard Dillon's reality lyrics predate roots music, encompassed ghetto life and love and stayed poignant in their career irrespective of the many producers they worked with. Of the 56 tracks at least 40 are highlights:from the late ska of Free Man, to the rocksteady of Cool it amigo and reggae of Condition bad a yard. All the hits are featured: Train to skaville, Train to glory, Reggae hit the town, Everything crash, Mother's tender care, The selah ao. The interesting liner notes complement this marvellous compilation of one of reggae's greatest groups.

Birthday Party from Oct 1968, and the eponymous Idle Race from July 1969 are two of the worst albums I've ever heard from this or any other era. The third album, Time Is from May 71, bears no similarity and shouldn't really have been released under the name Idle Race. Jeff Lynne had long departed and Time Is has a low key, unremarkable folk rock style, very mediocre but not unlistenable. The ten bonus tracks are identical in approach to the sixties Idle Race. The overall sound quality is the bottom 2% of music released on proper lables at the time, and sounds like the 2 inch master was run through a transistor radio and remastered on a portable cassette, so tiny, muzzy and feeble is it.
This isn't rock or pop or psychedelia as we know ... Read More:

Thunder at their best, live. The CD encapsulates everything that made Thunder the best British rock band of their time, and reminds us all of what we are missing. The album itself is not as well polished as their previous live release, but then again, it's not meant to be. It's Thunder how they really are; live, raw, and fantastic!

While many have already been accustomed to Toni Braxton's excellent first albums and display some uneasiness to this hip-hop/R&B edge truth be told this modern flair is off the charts better than many other R&B artists out there! She nails the singing, the music is on the mark, the production is classy, and the overall listening experience is renovated to new sensations very much complimentary to her first beginning albums. As Janet changes, Mariah changes, why not have Toni also make a nice transition while preserving some of her old hits? This is a great album definitely priceless and amplified to display more than a woman!

This album opens with a smashing opening track, "Let Me Show You The Way (Out)" incorporating blends of R&B, hip ... Read More:

Thunder... one of Britains best kept secrets, a truly fantastic rock band with one of the best live shows you'll ever see.

This compliation is a collection of all their best ballads, including one new one (all gentle acoustic stumming). The songs are pretty much faultless throughout (standout tracks include EMI compliation staple Love Walked In and Low Life in High Places), the only gripe with the collection is that the theme does make for a more one dimensional listen than the studio albums proper. However, if rock ballads are what makes you tick, this is as good a collection as you will find anywhere.

This album is not one of the best albums done by Thunder. It does not seem to have all the songs we all know and love. However it is worth buying if you like acoustic and the boys even get to answer a few questions which they never take seriously.

This new single, from the forthcoming abum "Dead Media", is just fantastic. All analogue synths and drum machines, it is a far dry from the (slightly) overproduced "We Love The City", and is a beautiful tale of Al Bean, fourth man on the moon. Plus, excellent b-sides, in the tradition of all hefner singles.
