This quality, value release signals the fact the compilation album is far from dead. Most of these interpretations of old English songs of love, drink and death have been specially commissioned for the album and the label has wisely shied away from lining-up the usual suspects to record them. In fact, it's one of the most eclectic rosters around ranging from the strange new world of Serafina Steer to the strange old worlde of Noel Harrison (best known for his 1960s' TV career and the single hit 'Windmills of your Mind'). Ok...so I'm new to the folk scene, but what an introduction. Excellent!! Made me want more and feel more confident about exploring the possibilities.

This compilation has received some glowing reviews, but after living with it for more than two weeks I am somewhat perplexed as to why. Firstly, little of the content actually provides what it says on the cover - it ain't folk, folktronica or even roots. A moot case in point is the inclusion of Green Peppers, whose song is actually one of the better offerings, but about as close to folk as Prefab Sprout! Too many of the songs on this record are simply poor and should never have got beyond the bedroom. Thankfully, it is saved from complete disaster courtesy of a handful of genuinely quality offerings - most notably from Lisa Knapp, Damian Katkhuda, Daniel Orcese and The Circus Of Dr.Lao.
