_____ The Drop is essentially Eno working with "organic composition" programs on a computer. That is, he puts a lot of short musical phrases and rhythms into a computer, and lets the program "organically" mutate them over time. The result is really rather interesting. All but the last track are little "ambient" style pieces, designed to get your mind used to hearing this style of composition, and then you get the whopping big 36 minute final track which actually carries the concept through (obviously it takes a long piece to get fully to grips with this technique). 'Works well with others' was probably on the young Eno's school report, and he's generally known for his inspirational collaborations. Here, he's on his own, except for whatever box of tricks he conjures up the 17 pieces on this charming CD from. Most are no more than three minutes long, instrumental sketches each with a mood of its own, and together they create a collage that's by turns tentative, curious, amused, restful, puzzled. The last piece, clocking in at over half an hour, is Iced World, which is I believe an example of generative music, ie music that creates itself from parameters that its programmer sets out.
