All the music on this CD was recorded at John R T Davis's studio in 1968. The style is based on the white small group jazz of the 1920's but the band are not simply copyists but create a completely individual sound. It seems invidious to single out individuals but Dick Sudhalter's Bix inspired cornet and Henry Francis' stride piano are a continual delight. You may not have heard of the 'Anglo American Alliance' but this meeting of friends playing music they love will give hours of pleasure. Enjoy!

This is a good collection of Philips years at Kudu records, though the sampler "The Best of the Kudu Years 1971-77: Home is Where the Hatred is" is an even better buy. Philips had a distinctive voice that not everybody appreciate, but among those who do many hold her as one of the greatest singers ever. Some of her earlier recordings are arguably her best ever. If you are the least interested in soul or simply deep and emotional music you should listen to this music along with the Atlantic-sampler "The Best of Esther Phillips (1962-70)".
