When I initially saw the film (great film BTW) I was intrigued by the music, which sounded like authentic music from the middle ages, but I didn't recognise any particular piece. I was surprised to discover the compositions were contemporary, because the style is so realistic. A very simple style, but very beautiful music, which I'm sure will be enjoyed by anyone who likes music from the renaissance period.

The Classic FM `Movie Themes' 3 CD box sets appear on a annual basis. In 2006 we had `Classic FM at the Movies', in 2007 there was the `Sequel' and now we have the 2008 `Ultimate'. The first and sequel sets were a good choice of music from popular films, the sequel making a particularly good buy because it consisted of tracks from a different selection of films than on the original. The `Ultimate' title of this latest release implies that it's either the best one or the final one, but in my opinion it's neither. It's not the best for there is a considerable overlap with the music from the previous Classic FM Movie CDs, and it probably won't be the final one of its type thanks to the vast back catalogue of film ... The original `Pure' album was released in 2003, and despite there now being a confusing number of variations of it (special edition, import, bonus tracks & bonus discs) there are basically two editions - the original single disc and this 2CD Special Edition which adds a bonus disc to the original one. The songs are a mixture of classical, popular and traditional, with some highly original and unexpected choices such as `River of Dreams' which is a transcription of Vivaldi's lovely violin solo 'largo' from `The Four Seasons', and a powerful recording of `Benedictus' from the Karl Jenkins' album `The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace'.
