I first encountered Rebecca Pidgeon as the talent behind a folk band called Ruby Blue, who had moderate success in the 1980s. I was utterly bewitched by her then, and continue to be.

What dragged me in at the beginning was that many of her Ruby Blue songs seemed to speak directly to me (we are about the same age), and echoed feelings I had at the time.

As Rebecca has pursued her solo career in the US, she has released 3 CDs with Chesky records. This one remains my favourite. Although her lyrics no longer resonate with me quite so much, her outstanding vocal range and crystal-clear voice are just as dazzling.

Granted, it was a rock and roll magazine, but still I felt a considerable pang of disappointment that "One Night Stand: Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club" wasn't featured, as it just about wipes the floor with all of them.

No one can dispute Sam Cooke was an amazing singer, but this record not only underlines that particular fact in the boldest pen possible, but demonstrates he was a showman without equal. This is an astonishing record. A perfectly formed, brilliant emotional journey that Cooke, through his amazing talent, leads you by the hand all the way through.
