it counts as a great, but still early tribute to the singer songwriter that Neil still is. This three cd collection of neils gems also contain original and sometimes very funny tracks and try outs of "studio-playing (or fooling) around" with some of his songs (love on the rocks...)so the listener gets a pretty impressive insight in the artists work over the years. Its beautifully boxed and contains personal notes of Neil himself of how he sees his songs (which can be quite reveiling...) for every die hard fan a total must in every ND collection.

Four stars because by now there are many more extensive Neil Diamond compilations available. This set of 12 classic songs demonstrates Diamond's compositional skills and great voice with catchy tunes, heartfelt delivery and great arrangements. The many cover versions of these tracks are proof of their enduring appeal. A song like I'm A Believer has more depth of feeling in Diamond's own version than the more famous Monkees cover, while on the ballads like Shilo his voice has a certain haunting tone that still gives me gooseflesh after all these years. Sweet Caroline, Holly Holy, Cracklin' Rosie and I Am I Said are my personal favorites on this collection. These are pop songs of quality and distinction.

I have to admit to being a little "one eyed" when it comes to reviewing this particular package. Having been blown away by his stunning "Hot August Night" live recording and the equally admirable "Love At The Greek" concert years later, the modern day Diamond is unfortunately a cabaret act if one is to be honest. Just one look at the venues tells you that - two discs cover his Vegas concerts. Gone is the exciting artist that lit up the 70s, when he actually played his guitar rather than used it as a prop. Bitter anti-Diamond fan? Far from it. I have been a fan for over 25 years, I just don't hide my disappointment like others and pretend he is still the performer he was. It may be argued that Neil Diamond has not been himself for some years now. If you don't believe me listen to these three discs (comprising all 6 of his earliest MCA studio albums) and you will be convinced of Mr Diamond's sparkling beginings. Skip the derisible "The Pot Smoker's Song" and the hokey "Knackelflerg" on Disc 1, and you are left with 69 tracks of sheer excellence. Apart from some of the classics, that all Diamond fans know and love, there are some lesser known gems - "Juliet" is a lovely, well paced love song as is "Hurtin' You Don't Come Easy" Disc 2 contains the wonderful "African Trilogy" a full sweeping mini rock opera that shows just how brave and experimental Diamond once was (and to be fair, still is in his live performances).
