Next to the 1959 Decca D'Oyly Carte recording of this early hit G&S operetta, this Mackerras version really represents the cream of the crop for all the currently available recordings of Pinafore. Although this recording doesn't come with the dialogue, it offers a lot, and it does so in spades. Mackerras adopts bright, breezy tempi throughout, and his orchestra responds with peerless playing. There is precision and life in every bar, and you feel as if you can hear the felicitous nuances in Sullivan's orchestrations. It helps that Mackerras is blessed by a superb cast of soloists.
