This is the first Russian opera I heard,(i wanted to hear more of it having played Polvotsian Dances in my Symphony Orchestra). Although it is not a bad piece there is something missing that makes it stand out from all other Operas written at the time,(this is not the fault of the performers but of the opera itself).However there is that truly Russian sense in the music. As expected Valery Gergiev brings of a faultless performance, and even manages to put life into the weaker scenes of the opera. Glaina Gorchakova sparkles as always and the rest of the casting is more than satisfactory,

The soundtrack of "When we were kings" is, as the movie itself, fascinating and mindblowing. It contains of some of the best live recordings I've ever heard. James Browns "Payback" is a total funk-energy-bombardment. One chills of delight of Bill Whiters smooth song and one jumps with joy to The Spinners "I'll be around". It also features Busta Rhymes best effort ever in the hip-hop classic "Rumble in the Jungle". And for all those Mohammed Ali fans there are a fistful of witty and powerful qoutes. A must for every Black-music lover !
